Never been one to "put all my eggs in one basket" so to speak. I quilt, cross stitch, do thread crochet, knit, sew garments, paint, do stain glass, draw, dabble in tatting, read, work puzzles, etc., etc., etc. Just can't understand the concept of someone being "bored". I'll be 75 years old next month. My only concern is not living long enough to do all the projects I have in mind!

DonnaC 07-13-2012 05:01 AM

Ah yes, there are many just like you. I started out as a garment sewer, then got into sewing crafts (like making bags) and quilting. I also knit, crochet, bead, cross-stitch, and scrapbook. Love to read, and.... almost forgot... I have to work full time also LOL!

So funny that someone mentioned tatting - that's the one thing I have never been able to conquer - so I just signed up for the Craftsy course on it! Because I NEED another hobby!

Mariposa 07-13-2012 05:04 AM

Yep! I am right there with you!! Quilting, embroidery, cross-stitch, making jewelry, making dolls, doing miniatures, and the list goes on........ :)

I say that I do and enjoy anything with a needle and fibers/fabric. I scrapbook a bit. All of these are therapy. Why lay on a guy's couch for an hour to the tune of $60, $70, $100 and have nothing to show for it. All of this is great therapy. I do one craft for a while and throw myself into it. Right now it is knitting but getting very interested in quilting again. Will put away the yarn and knitting needles and bring out the fabric stash...large stash. My poor family but I love what I do. Don't worry if you enjoy it, just enjoy every minute of whatever it is!!

newbiequilter 07-13-2012 06:31 AM

Quilting, ceramics, card making, stained glass stepping stones, gardening, reading, exercise, beading......that is just what I can think of right now.....

sguillot 07-13-2012 06:49 AM

I don't think you can ever have to many hobbies. We go through different phases in our lives and what you like today might not hold you interest tomorrow. You should challenge your self and do whatever feel right to you. One day you may be to old to enjoy some things and will regret that you didn't at least challenge your self. Do whatever ever feel right to you.

kat112000 07-13-2012 06:50 AM

I used to cross-stitch, plastic canvas, paint clay pots and scrapbook, but quilting has taken the front stage for me. This is a very expensive hobby, which you all know, and so was scrapbooking so the old pocket book had to pick one or the other!

judord 07-13-2012 06:59 AM

Oh my goodness! I am glad to know that I am not the only one! I have many hobbies, and love to try new things. I sew, quilt, knit, crochet, make jewelry, etc. I just love to try new things. Keeps life exciting.

You are certainly not alone! I spin my own yarn, felt, knit, used to crochet and tat, sewed all my kids clothes when they were young, quilt, stamp, read, read, read, and if I have any time left over I have to clean my house!

Jeandrig 07-13-2012 07:54 AM

Go for it Girl. You shouldn't ever have to say you're bored.... I hate that word. I'm into wanting to do a lot of things. I also want to learn to "tat"

I believe your philosophy is right on. I have had various creative hobbies along the way in my life. I will get very involved in garment sewing, uphostery, decopage, embrodiery, crochet and then move on to whatever piques my interest. Of course, moving around like that keeps me from ever being an expert in any one skill. It seems a little strange to me when people don't have hobbies. I think of hobbies as being more active than reading or working crossword puzzles. which begs the question, what is a hobby?

IBQLTN 07-13-2012 08:32 AM

I love to play in multi-medias! Mostly for me lately it's jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, earrings, key fobs, book marks), sewing small accessories for your purse, making purses, and am working on a few more ideas for an upcoming craft show.

I bought a LOT of the little knit gloves they sell at JoAnns when they were on clearance and I'm going to decorate them with yo-yos at the cuff.

Have bought material & supplies for making recipe flower pots for the kitchen ... fill with plaster of Paris, insert a fork sticking up like a flower stem, bend the tines, insert recipe card and decorate (saw it on line somewhere).

My problem is ... I have so many different kinds of projects there's no place to store the supplies! AND so many things to choose from I can't decide what to work on so I don't work on anything.

Anyone else do that?

CAS49OR 07-13-2012 09:25 AM

I was just thinking that! The more you do the more neurons you build! Or is it neuron pathways? I just started learning to knit, have been crocheting for years. I paint oil paintings. I'm pretty new to sewing, started because I wanted to sew my own clothes......somehow got side-tracked with quilting.

thank you all! No more guilt about all my "toys"! Beside, I always say we have to keep learning new things to keep our brain sharp. This is how I justify my hobbies!

wordpaintervs 07-13-2012 09:46 AM

Me too. The more things I know how to do, the more I want to learn to do. Now days the dolls for sick kids I make and give away take up most of my time.....those and the writing I share. I need to sit an hour or two a day to the novels I sat aside. OH MY GOODNESS...what to do....what to do. Have to say I know the dolls for the kids are the most important at this point in time.

For those keeping up with my getting sick, I am beginning to feel better at last. Taking that as a good sign and maybe the potential of lung cancer wasn't real.

jmoore 07-13-2012 11:19 AM

Having a couple of different hobbies allows you to be creative depending on what your mood is. It seems I always have a quilt in progress, a crochet project and maybe a good book.... that way you can work on one or the other as your mood suits you. I also use my passenger time in the car to finish binding projects or crochet.

Like you I have far too many interest and figure I have "ADD" Attention Deficit Disorder.

Jeanine 07-13-2012 11:47 AM

I always have various projects going at once - each has it's own purpose. For instance, I knit/crochet on the bus to work (can't do much else on those mountain roads), I applique at work while waiting for the bus (small, easy to carry), I embroider or counted stitch when I need to turn off my brain, and hand quilting helps when I need to solve a problem. I still sew garments - when I have to. And like everyone else, many more I want to do. I thought about changing and only focusing on one to become proficient - hubby said why stress yourself, what if you choose the wrong one. But then he says I think too much.

carolynjo 07-13-2012 11:50 AM

Keep using that old brain and learning new things! If you don't use it, you lose it!

rusty quilter 07-13-2012 12:28 PM

I do crochet and at one time did make garments. I fell in love with quilting 20 years ago--however the birth of of my grand daughter has brought me back into garment making on a limited basis though.

Latrinka 07-13-2012 03:21 PM

I do quilting, cross-stitching, have done scrapbooking, like making little things like baby bibs, burp cloths, pillowcases, decorative pillow covers, curtains. I think we all are just crafty people here!

Me, too! Now I want to learn to tat.

Wow haven't heard that in along time, had a neighbor once who could tat it was impressive. Her mom made her wedding dress and veil and she tatted all these motifs for the veil as I remember it was beautiful.

joyce888 07-13-2012 05:19 PM

I have other interests and hobbies besides quilting. I think it keeps me from getting bored or burned out on quilting.

Yes, yes, yes! But I watch my two little grandsons four days a week, love to read, finishing up on a baby quilt, yard work, and I would love to get back into some art/painting if there just was more open time. Some day...... Oh yes, forgot about counted cross stitch and embroidery which I can't seem to get to very often.

RugosaB 07-13-2012 07:44 PM

quilting, garment sewing, decorative sewing, crochet, organic flower gardening, used to be dog showing and breeding too, making jewelry, attending auctions. Plus, my husband and I are still working on 'this old house,' it's more of a hobby, than a project with an end
No, my house is not clean LOL

MimiBug123 07-13-2012 09:23 PM

You make me feel so good! I am truly not alone. I quilt, scrapbook, sew for my DGD, paint, decorate my home (often), make cakes-you name it, I've tried it! I think these things truly keep me sane! Plus I love seeing my handiwork. It makes me proud of myself!

ckcowl 07-14-2012 02:33 AM

i don't think it is a bad thing to enjoy doing a number of different 'crafty' hobby's---do what you love- i used to every year decide to learn to do something new- basket weaving, wool rug hooking, ceramics, stained glass, jewelry making, pottery, locker hooking, soft sculpture, knitting, crocheting, tatting, fabric dyeing, the list goes on & on---i primarily quilt- but every now & then i want to knit something---or create something different- and love it all- some of my past passions i still am well stocked for & can turn to it any time i want- others i have to go pick up a few things if i decide i want to but i enjoy it all and love to come across some new hobby-craft that i havent tried yet. i never feel guilty for learning how to do new things especially when creating items that are useful (gifts, keeps, sells-what ever)

nstitches4u 07-14-2012 08:56 AM

I have a lot of hobbies and interests. Nothing wrong with that. People who don't have hobbies are dull! lol

sosewcrazy 07-14-2012 09:48 AM

I love all crafts- sewing, crocheting, painting, jewelry, English smocking, sewing garments - you name it! I do mostly quilting, but always have some kind of hand project going on, too. Like you, I've often wondered if I'm spreading myself too thin!

WisWis 07-14-2012 10:09 AM

I bought a book today to teach myself crochet, as I would like to learn.
Recently I returned to knitting and enjoyed it.

johnniesgirl 07-14-2012 06:39 PM

I'm with you Kerlin. I too love to learn and do crafts but I found myself going crazy trying to purchase everything I needed for each so, I decided to narrow it down to 2 or 3 for now. I don't feel so frustrated that way.

hensandhollyhocks 07-14-2012 08:47 PM

I have so many hobbies and interests that my teenager insists I am crazy (like teenagers aren't?). I feel I am prepared for life and enjoying every moment of it.

rekrug 07-17-2012 07:55 AM

LOL should I add the additional 6 hobbies I do????? Keep learning, it's good for the brain if not the pocketbook. I tend to do one or two projects of one thing, then go to another, etc. Inbetween, there is always a quick gift or project. I would get bored if I stuck with one type of craft or project!

shayzamn 07-17-2012 08:05 AM

Urgh... let's see... quilting, costuming, jewlery making (mostly for said costumes), crocheting (learning), weaving, cross-stitching, writing, stained glass, resin-casting, soap making, candle making (the last four not so much these days). I have ADD and so I jump from project to project a lot, until I get obsessively into one of them and focus on it to the exclusion of all else.

And I am making yarn dolls for a future project. I need at least 300, and have about 120. Good thing I have time on this one!

Helen S 07-17-2012 08:15 AM

I used to have many different hobbies but after downsizing several times, both in preparation for retirement and then after retirement, I seem to have pretty much stuck to the sewing stuff. I make most of my own blouses, bathrobes, etc, so will probably always do that, but my hands don't work as well anymore so haven't done any crocheting / knitting in about 10 years. Besides, after all that downsizing, we have no room for all the extra stuff! lol
