I am thrilled for you! Yea, keep oiling it and sewing with it and after a while it will be good as new. I am having fun with my mom's machine. In fact I think I will take it to my sewing studio in the basement so I can use it there, and bring up my old treadle so I can use it upstairs if the power fails. I have some other old ones I need to get out and lube up again.

cjomomma 08-24-2010 12:30 PM

Thank you everyone. I have to wait to get the cord for it but atleast I know it works.

CarrieAnne 08-24-2010 01:02 PM

WTG Girl!!!! You beat my $3.00 deal on a machine for Maria. It's a Singer 6235 & I have to buy a manual as it is an automatic bobbin winder. I can't even figure out how to wind the bobbin....LOL Go figure huh!

You would probably get more answers if you start a new topic. Not everyone comes back to read the new posts with in a topic. If you need help on how to do just let me know?

I missed your first post about the machine. What kind of machine did you get for $2? Sounds like a bargain for sure.

I'm very excited for you. I just got my 1924 treadle working. It just needed a new belt and some oiling. Of course, I had to figure out how to thread it, but it felt like Christmas when I sewed a line of stitching, and it worked!!! It does bite you with the bug to buy every bargain vintage/antique machine you see! Good luck driving by the next garage sale.

Quilting Nana 08-25-2010 09:40 AM

YEA
Congratulations!

perry 08-25-2010 12:05 PM

YAY!!!!!

Kerosene again?

According to some very old manufacturer's documentation . . .

For a machine you ARE supposed to oil . . .

If it is sluggish and gummy or just plain stuck . . . a few drops of kerosene or gasoline . . . go figure.

If you need to clean the old oil out and just spruce up the joints, an old Singer manual mentioned a few drops of kerosene at all the oiling points, being careful not to spill of course.

After letting the few drops of kerosene soak in a few minutes, manually turn the machine over and then go ahead and run it a little bit at low speed. Only a little!!

Immediately after running in the kerosene for a few moments OIL, OIL, OIL with fresh oil before actually trying to sew on it again.

You don't want to run it with dry joints!

Oil, oil, oil with fresh oil.

This seems to go along well with Billy's cleaning tutorials, just a gentler tidying of joints rather than full-out cleaning.

Well, . . . according to Singer ;-)
