I have a singer (about 12yrs old) too and I had to buy the walking foot. The regular foot won't work too good as the top & botton will be uneven.

My machine has a locking stitch that just goes down 3 times in the same spot then I clip the threads flush with the quilt. Not had a problem

I usually start and end with 3 of the smallest stitches my machine will make, overlapping them

I end where I started, then cut the strings about 3-4inches long, pull up the bobbin thread, knot them, and bury the thread in the batting and cut it.

I was taught to start the quilting with about three tiny stitches, then set the stitch length to normal. I do the same when stopping the quilting line. So far, it's worked for me.
