Top stitch needle
 

I have heard that it is good to use a topstitch needle for machine quilting. Is this a good tip? And what size would you use? I want to try it. Thanks for your input.

I've heard that as well. I'm not very good at the FMQ, but I do think the topstitch needle is helpful. I've used a 90/14, mostly. Interested to see what others say.

The size of the needle depends on the thread weight. You can visit. Superior Threads for free charts that tell you what size needle to use with which threads. Often if you are experiencing stitch problems, breaking thread it is due to the incorrect size/ type needle.

It is a good one to try. Topstitch needles have a sharp point, and are a bit more sturdy than some others. They also have a larger eye & larger scarf that may minimize shredding. If you are embarking on FMQ on your domestic machine, you need to be open to try different things because every machine and sewer is a unique combo. So try different needles, feed dogs up or down, different threads, different feet etc.

I only use top stitch needles for piecing and machine quilting. I use different sizes for each weight and ply of thread.

they are easy to thread they have a big eye

I use a 16 for fmq.

What Paper Princess said. Larger eye, larger scarf for the thread to tuck into, it minimizes friction on the thread as the needle goes in and out of the fabric.

I usually use a 16 or 18. I believe if you're quilting on a DSM you probably can get away with a 14.

I use a size 90 topstitch needle when I FMQ. I find that the larger eye helps keep the thread from breaking.

WOW, I had never heard of this type of needle. I use Schmetz needles that are made for quilting. Interesting things you can learn on this board.
