Hello,
I just got his quilt top today in a bulk box of fabric. I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about it. Is it worth anything? How old is it? Any info would be great.
Thank you,
Judy

Don't know what fabrics are in it, but it kinda looks like a victorian fan quilt. Looks like it has silk and velvet in it???

It's hard for us to tell looking at the picture.
Look at the types of fabric ... and the ages of them.
Consider the construction methods, and the sewing/stitches used.
How white are the whites? Is there any yellowing?

There really isn't enough there for us to see IMHO to help you with the dating of it.
It could be as old as "made last week" or ..... ancient!

Regardless, it's a lovely piece ... and I hope you have fun finishing it up.

I will try to get better pics taken. I think it is silk.

My thoughts exactly. If you do suspect it is very old and you are not thinking of keeping it, perhaps get it appraised.

It is very pretty

If you're asking whether it has historical value, you might be able to take it to a quilt museum and get an expert opinion. If it is a vintage top it might be better to leave it unfinished. As far as monetary value, it might fetch something at an auction or on ebay or etsy, especially if you have information about its age or history. Just about any quilt is "worth something"...

I wondered if it should be finished or not. I don't think I will. Im not sure yet. I definately need to research it some more.

Looks like it is a fan quilt made similar to a crazy quilt. When finished it would have been embelished with lots of hand embroidery. Nice!

if you feel it is in good shape= and could be valuable-contact a quilt appraiser and have it appraised. the American Quilter's Society certifies appraisers- and have a list of (trained) ones on their website by location-
of check with a local guild. and see if there is anyone in your area.

I agree with jbj137! Send it to me! I would love it, the way all quilts need to be loved...:o

That is what I think, too, like Valleyquiltermo.

Is there a LQS near you that could link you up with an appraiser? See if there is a quilt show coming near you that is offering appraisals.

judy_68 02-28-2012 05:38 PM

I think I found a place to take it. I just have to get there before they close after work.
Thank for all of your input.

It looks like a fairly recent top as the fans seem to have been satin stitched by machine, based on what I can tell from the picture. It if is fairly recently made, it may not be of much monetary value. Good luck on your search.

Gorgeous quilt top! Any way to trace it back through the source?

sylvia77 02-29-2012 08:15 PM

A quilt appraiser could give you the answer you want.

Go to Quiltindex.org and see if they have someone in your area who is doing the documentation project for Michigan State University. They have people in the Pittsburgh area who were able to tell me that the quilt I got at the 3 Rivers Quilt show for 10$ was in fact a crazy quilt made in the 1930s-Their appraiser can tell you what fabrics and how old for a small donation(usually 5$) Great find!!!

Is the black velvet? Looks great. Congrats.

judy_68 03-03-2012 06:06 PM

I actually think it is hand stitched. But, I could be wrong.
