I am drawing a complete blank here  ...my pattern says "finish by topstitching 1/4" from the edge all around the top of your tote." I'm not familiar with the term "topstitch". What does it mean? I KNOW lots of you can come to my rescue...Please and thank you!! :D

When I make totes, I topstitch at a 1/4" from the right side around the top edge after the lining is in. It holds the lining secure without riding up. I set a longer stitch because of all the layers, and when I reach a seam, or a handle placement, I lengthen again a bit more just for that distance (or you may find your thread will snap).
You could use a toning thread or a contrast for effect.

What is topstitching? Just regular stitching on my machine?
By the way...Katrine...the babies in your avatar are beautiful!! I want one so bad!!!

Yes. Topstitching is just regular straight stitching. Usually you increase your stitch length to accommodate the thicker layers you are sewing through. "Decorative topstitching" means you use a decorative stitch to do the topstitching.

And if the fabrics are really heavy, try using your quilting foot. If not, and you have one, a 1/4" foot works great!

You can use a twin needle and have perfectly spaced double top stitching.

Belinda,
I just took two pic's of a tote, I made & a close up of the top stitching. I had a hard time understanding it oo, when I was learning. Hope this helps.
