Press the seams before you open them to keep it from unraveling.

Welcome from Wisconsin. Happy quilting!

Welcome from Missouri. I have a stitch on my machine that will backstitch in the beginning and then you hit the backstitch button at the end of the seam. I know that the stitching won't come out if you don't backstitch but I like to backstitch to be sure that it doesn't come loose.

Chain piecing doesn't always work well, but when you can do it--DO IT! It saves a lot of time and thread.

Big warm welcomes from Singapore! Every quilter starts off the same way you did. Enjoy your stay here!

jhoward 10-18-2010 08:44 AM

Google Eleanor Burns, as she was probably the person who started the chain piecing. She also includes videos on her website, "Quilt in a Day". There are other videos on the web. When I lose my mind/memory, I do a web search as there is a bounty of info out there.

Welcome to this wonderful site.

From sunny Minnesota,
Judy

Welcome!!

It's great and saves lots of time in quilts like you are doing. No, the thread will not unravel plus you will be catching it up in the seams. Good luck with your quilting.

Welcome from England - I'm also a newcomer. Just use a slightly smaller stitch than usual was the tip that I was given.

Hey,from Ct.I find when I chain piece if I leave a little thread between the two pieces I don't cut to close to either side for a little wiggle room.

I learned this step at the site Missouri Star Quilt Co. I learned a ton of things from them. Also this site is the best. If you ask a question be prepared for all kinds of answers. It's great!!

If you use a 2 to 2.5 setting on your stitch length, it will be fine. It will only unravel if you have a looser or longer stitch length. it is a chain piecing technique that is common to machine piecing and quilting. It saves on cotton thread and time.

Hi and Welcome!
I found watching El Burns on Quilt in a Day the best for learning how to quilt. She has a site now with learning video's for free. www.quilt-in-a-day.com

Jshep 10-19-2010 08:44 AM

Hi, welcome from Arkansas. Between this board and the videos I have learned so much. I also very much enjoy Elenor Burns. Everything she does is so easy to follow. I was watching one of her shows on TV a while back. She was wearing a watch exactly like one I have, she was using the exact same fabric that I have and she was wearing the color of nail polish that I wear. How funny is that. LOL

LanaCindy 10-19-2010 05:04 PM
