Tote bag with bottom
 

Any recommendations for patterns of tote bags that have a flat bottom? I'd like to make some reusable bags for grocery shopping and use some of my stash. Might also make some for Christmas gifts if they turn out. I'd like some kind of heavier bottom so the items don't fall over in the bag.

Have you "googled"? I found a bunch of free bag patterns. For the bottom, there are lots of things you can use. I use foam core board cut to fit and then I made a "slipcover" for them.

I've used heavy cardboard (from a box) that I made a cover for. Just have to remember to take it out first if you wash your bags. Don't ask how I know this! LOL!

I use the plastic canvas sold at craft stores for bottom. I cut them to the size I need for the bottom, then I cover them with fabric to match the tote. I've also used upholstery fabrics for making totes, these are more durable than the regular cotton fabrics. Better yet, you can use old denim jeans.

My mom took apart a grocery bag to use as a pattern for a grocery bag sized tote. It has a flat bottom. She used iron on-pellon on the inside. She didn't use anything special on the bottom, but lots of things would work. Cardboard has been suggested. To make it washable, the plastic canvas could be used.

I'm doing that too! I'm using old feed bags for my liners. You know, those woven plastic bags that dog food and chicken feed come in these days. I'm adding appliqued quilt fabrics to the outside and sewing nylon handles.

I just took apart an old TRADER JOE'S bag to use for a template. You could also just cut a regular, brown paper grocery bag for a pattern. It consists of 2 rectangular sides and one, long rectangular piece that wraps from front, to bottom, to back. The seams are stitched on the outside and covered with a contrasting binding. I'm still waiting for my nylon strapping to show up in the mail to complete them. I'll send over some pix when I'm done.
