My sister and I are making sampler quilts. I am looking for opinions as to which blocks MUST be included:

We want blocks that are instantly recognizable as "the greatest blocks of all time."

Samples:
Log cabin
Jacob's Ladder
Bear's Paw
Rail Fence

Any other suggestions?

We'd appreciate any suggestions you might have!

Jack in the box, card trick, goose in the pond, delectible mts., LeMoyne Star, bow ties, pieced hearts, to name a very few. I love sampler quilts. I'm doing a BOM sampler quilt at the quilt shop here. It started today. I can't wait to get started on the first block. Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi!

I think the Ohio Star and Churndash go perfectly with for a pieced sampler.

Loretta suggested some Underground Railroad blocks for your traditional block sampler quilt. Go to your public library and try to get the book Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson. It's a Newbury Honor Book and will be located in the children's section of your library. It's a picture book about several generations of black girls from the same family growing up as slaves and then free. But they all learn to quilt from their mothers. The patterns that they use are all traditional patterns and the pictures are wonderful. On some of the pages, the blocks are named for you. It will definitely give you an idea of what blocks were supposed to have been used.

I do not think that these quilts were used to guide the way for runaway slaves on the underground railroad, but the idea of how they passed the block patterns and quilting skills down from one generation to the next is really interesting.

My Mom did a sampler with Sunbonnet Sue, for the applique.

I just finished a sampler course, dresden plate, and one english paper piecing block - tumbling blocks were included. Also one I don't see much I think it is called mexican star or mexican cross.
