Treasures found at thrift store...

I went by local thrift store (haven't been in a very long time). I go look for sheets, pillowcases, material. Well, I found a cute pillowcase $.49 (in green swirl), a panel for a frog $.99 (I will cut out pieces for little 1/2 squares, whatever I can salvage, greens, reds, blacks, red plaid), 1 yd of yellow $.69 & best find yet--- a 3- tiered skirt of valentine theme, bet there's 2 or 3 yrds there $.99.... They have reasonable prices. money goes to Association of Retarded Citizens...

Love it when we're able to find such bargins.
Also love it when we're able to take someone's throw-aways and make something of them.

I love a good thrift store day! Congratulations!

Great finds!

Lori S 01-22-2013 06:50 AM

You did well! Thrift stores here have gotten so popular that the pricing is not so thrifty anymore.

Jingle 01-22-2013 09:37 AM

Thrift stores around here don't have fabrics. Not stuff in very good condition. I have so much fabrics, I really don't need to buy more.

sewingsuz 01-22-2013 10:14 AM

I get real excited and happy when I find a deal like this. Have fun and show us a picture.

carolaug 01-22-2013 10:16 AM

I agree with many of the thifrt store prices...they are going up and I find many items more expensive than a brand new item in the store. I miss the days when thifting was not popular...the prices were so much cheaper.

solstice3 01-24-2013 06:12 AM

pickins are slim and prices ridiculous at many thrift stores in my area. (Some things less expensive at wal-mart) congrats on the find

damaquilts 01-24-2013 06:40 AM

I go on days when the clothes are 1/2 off. Skirts have plenty of fabric in them. For speciality prints check out uniform tops. Large sizes yield more than enough to add to a scrappy quilt. Want plaids Mens shirts. Denim, I just got a few extra large jeans for 1.50. I take the fabric and give the zippers to my massage therapist . She makes the zipper bracelets. I don't see a lot of fabric anymore in thrift stores. Matteress covers not often but when I find them they are good for the filler in crate pads for dogs. I haven't bought sheets yet since most are not cotton but if I find any with the tag "organic cotton" I will grab them. They won't go into any fancy quilts I make but for dogs blankets and couch quilts they are just fine.

Congrats on the finds. I go to the GW boutique occasionally to look but have not found much lately. I usually donate to the local church thrift store as they give clothes away if someone needs them, instead of selling them.

I buy newborn clothes and shoes for my dolls at the thrift stores. Lots of them are brand new because the babies grow too fast to use the "newborn" size. I'd rather shop at the thrift store than shop at regular stores. It's the thrill of the find.

I do well at one thrift store. They have 1/2 off every couple of weeks. They get donations of new stuff from deapartment stores. I got flannel sheet sets that I use for backing on quilts. I have made a couple of denim quilts from jeans I have picked up. The largest sizes have the lowest prices, and the most fabric. I made a rag quilt from shirts. I look for high end brands, as the quailty is wonderful. Nothing like having Ralph Lauren, etc.

If you're willing to spend time with a seam ripper, there are treasures at thrift stores. One thing I passed up in December was a deep red velvety duvet cover for $10. A bit over my junker budget----------but it would have been a good buy for fabric.

mpspeedy2 01-24-2013 02:51 PM

I do a lot of charity sewing. I have great luck picking up pretty sheets to make the Princess Pillowcase dresses. I often pick up odd sewing supplies like bias tape etc. which I can use for the dresses.

mommafank 01-24-2013 04:48 PM

I think my two best thrift stores finds were 13 yards of 90 wide unbleached excellent quality muslin for 4.00 and old quilting mags for 20 cents each. I have picked up lots of odds and ends of fabric as well----always for just a little.

mommafank 01-24-2013 04:50 PM

Forgot----buy all my books there for reading-----50 cents for paperbacks and 1.00 hard covers. I love to read and find some very good ones there. I probably have enough to keep me in reading until the end of time!

What is a zipper bracelet?

I love going to thrift shops...I am always looking for pillowcases for making Pillowcase dresses for Dress a Girl Around the World...I have bought plain shirts, 100% wool shirts and sweaters, and other items...usually try to buy when they are on special. I also do buy books, cd's and movies...such a great price compared to the regular stores. You have to go regularly if you are really looking for certain things. There is pleasure in the hunt and joy when a treasure is found.

I've been picking up mattress pads at estate sales. I figure I can kill anything on them with a heavy bleach wash. I like a nice heavy quilt, so I use the mattress pads for batting. I can usually get one for less than $5. - way cheaper than batting! Easy to quilt since they're already quilted, and the quilts have that nice heavy weight that I love to snuggle under!

Our thtift stores have so over priced everything that you can add and extra buck or two and go to Joanns, or for clothing at JC Penneys, Macies (sale) TJ Max, etc. So why not buy new rather than used at that price?

slk350 01-24-2013 09:59 PM

I find the prices much higher than they used to be. I never find any fabric in my local thrift shops.

craftyheart2 01-24-2013 10:45 PM

I make string blocks and usually use calico (muslin) for the foundation. This past week I purchased a pair of long curtains and two sheets (all cotton) for $5 plus two metres of a boy's print quilting material for $4. Very rare to find cotton sheets around here.

LoisM 01-24-2013 11:05 PM

I always love to hear what people find at thrift stores and garage sales. I haven't had any luck at thrift stores in my area.

Monroe 01-24-2013 11:28 PM

The Salvation Army and Goodwills within a 30 mile radius of me don't carry fabrics, only a very rare and broken parts machine, and clothing/sheets are outrageously priced! Most merchandise is broken and missing parts. Cheap dinnerware sets are sold by the piece- plates $2, etc. The clearance men's shirts from WalMart that had been 3.99 with the tag still in it are tagged there at 7.99, etc. I am lucky enough to have a community Thrift Shop 3 miles away- decent men's shirts are only $1-$3! If they close I don't know where I'll go. Very occasionally I'll find nice fabric, but that's probably because someone from my Guild got there before me. All proceeds stay local. I ration my visits to 2x/month since there are bills to be paid. I don't go to garage sales, but do occasionally have good luck with Freecycle and Craigslist. Salvation Army donations from here immediately go out of state to a sorting warehouse. I picked up some books from a quilter that was moving and she'd just sent her husband to the SA with tubs of LQS fabrics! I raced there and was curtly told they were in the back and I could not buy them- at any price, that commonly fabric is just tossed since no one sews any more! I almost cried- missed the drop off by 15 minutes.

DOTTYMO 01-24-2013 11:45 PM

I went into a second hand shop (UK) to buy a skirt in the window. A snooty sale person looked me up and down and said, "it is only size 12" I replied " no problem I'm going to cut it up." You should have seen her face. My 6 year old nephew who was with me told me the lady looked upset when I answered her. After laughing I told him why. I cut up the skirt for applique roses it was perfect.

Not that good, but I got 15 yards of natural colored muslin (42") and a good bit of other odds and ends for $5 a couple years ago.

I"ve not been on Freecycle long but have never seen any sewing stuff. Craigslist has fabric once in a while, but generally the prices are way high.

OH, BTW, is $325 a good price for a Bernina Activia 125? (I think that was the name)
