I'm looking for a way to portray tree leaves using green mottledfabric. I've got some ideas but there are probably ways of doing it than what I can think of.
Thanks for reading this, and hope some of you can help me out.

Do you mean you are looking for block patterns of leaves? Silver Linings originals has some beautiful free PP patterns.

Here is a link for you to download

Are you appliquing or piecing them?

shequilts 07-14-2010 01:55 PM

I like to make "split" leaves using two different fabrics. It can really add depth. (I hope this is what you were asking.)

Pam, your appliques area beautiful.

Pam 07-14-2010 04:38 PM

Thanks Gramma, it is what I do! Been sidetracked with traditional quilting, but going to get back to it soon! The one with the corn is my first art quilt, no going back, for long, anyway.

GrammaNan 07-14-2010 04:45 PM

They are beautiful. Have you entered them in to any show?

Pam 07-14-2010 04:47 PM

No, not good enough for that, yet...

GrammaNan 07-14-2010 04:54 PM

You may want to reconsider, I think they are show worthy!

Pam 07-14-2010 04:58 PM

They are too small for the "big" shows, but I am "Movin" on Up" like the Jefferson's! Making them bigger and better. Smart money would bet on me posting here if I won something, to be sure!

I will wait for the notification of your first blue ribbon, I am guessing by the end of the year.

Do the colored pencils wash out? Do you heat set them? Are they regular colored pencils like we used in school? TIA
I can see a lot of places where these would be fun to use :D:D:D

Thanks, but kinda scary! I see the flaws. Judges are PAID to find my flaws, egads!!!

Pam - I think I recognize that foot as the one in your fairy quilt. I LOVE that quilt!

go outside pick a leaf trace arround --it use copier to get size you want it--trace on double sticky sided fusable stuff[tecnical word!] iron fabric cutout leaf shape iron on fabric--zig zag with machine or hand button hole to secure edges -- add veins as shown by pam-- Please show your quilts pam they may or may not win a ribbon but we all need eye cany to lift our spirits

wraez 07-14-2010 07:49 PM

Without knowing how you want to use them on your quilt... would using painted/heat bubbled tyvek work?

You can paint one side of your tyvek with some lumiere paints in several colors, sponging it on for a natural effect. Draw a leaf pattern on the tyvek, including veins, stitch around the tyvek and stitch in the veins, use pinking scissors to cut it out then apply hot iron with thin paper between tyvek and iron, you don't want it to melt on your iron plate. It will bubble and distort and look like a leaf. Sew it on your quilt. Tyvek can be washed.

just a thought

That is where my leaf shapes came from, right outside, go take a walk in the woods!

C.Cal Quilt Girl 07-14-2010 07:59 PM

Can't recall if green copies or not, I'd try picking leaves, and put on copy machine, can always make larger until the assortment is near the size you want. Good Luck

Pam, not sure what the rest of the Q looks like but what I see looks good....even if it dosen't place who cares... Go so more ppl can enjoy the craft & creativity aka eye candy! :)

The leaves are great, so natural looking! Great job!

Janied 07-15-2010 05:42 AM

I do longarm quilting and a customer of mine picked up leaves in the woods, copied the shapes, cut them out of fabric backed with wonder under, ironed them on in vertical rows on off white material. She then set them together with a leafy material strip. I think she had two rows of leaves and three strips of fabric. Also put 4 in the corners. She just called me yesterday and said she won first prize at the county fair. Yippee!!!!

hi all,
guess I wasn't specific enough.
I want to portray a tree, so there's bark and then the leaves, I'm guessing I cut a lump of mottled green fabric applique it and then have to designate leaves, above and beyond the outer edge cutting that I've done.
Thanks for your help!!

Also pam, I'm curious about the colored pencils also, just regular good quality colored pencils or do they have to be something special.
Thanks again
Peel

hi Janied,
that looks interesting, I didn't think of a couple of real leaf shapes combined with leaf fabric strips.
thanks,

Peel, I use all types of colored pencils. Even the cheapos, they make layering the colors on easier, the color is not so intense. The more expensive ones to do the darker and facial shadings. (I love Dick Blick, they carry a lot of colors). I just picked up a new box of pencils at Walmart for 79 cents. I pretty much like anything that will leave a mark!

How do you set the color in?

Pam 07-15-2010 10:21 AM

You heat set it, I also use oil pastels and heat set those. Supposedly they can be washed, but I do them on art quilts, so hopefully, no washing.

GrammaNan 07-15-2010 10:23 AM

Thanks!
