Trends you've seen come and go...and come back again

I started quilting in the early 90's. Sometimes I go a couple of years without looking at quilting magazines or websites. I recently got back into quilting and was surprised to see the use of solid colored fabrics.

When I first started quilting the book I referred to said to choose one print and then coordinating solids. By the late 90's no one was using solids. I visited 3 quilt shops near me and still found it hard to find solids. One shop owner hated solids and seldom carried them.

Now I see solids are back "in". Everything old is new again :)

What trends have you seen fade and then come back?

ManiacQuilter2 12-04-2014 04:51 AM

The reproduction prints of Aunt Grace are being printed again from Marcus Bros.

Right now it's hexagon quilts that are popular again. I'm seeing a lot of Sunbonnet Sue's being made again too.

Your question made me think about Anita Hallock's book, Fast Patch: A Treasury of Strip-Quilt Projects. Occasionally I notice that someone has 'invented' a 'new' technique, especially cutting diagonally to set the quilt on point, that Anita published in 1989. A brilliant and often over-looked piecing pioneer.

Thanks for the book reference. I ordered it from Amazon for $.01 . So I bought it for the price of shipping. LOL

Bad and naughty Sues are coming back.

I saw someone here a day or two ago asking about chenille quilts again.

Also, the ragged quilts which were popular in the late 1990s seem to all the thing again (to my personal chagrin, LOL!)

Now that's a bargain! When you get it, keep an open mind and try it. I know it looks pretty dated now, but it's brilliant and works for everything as claimed. The one for scrap quilts is also a keeper. I'm happy you're trying it out. Can't beat the price!

Seeing a lot more plaid lately too.

I thought chevron pattern was "old" when it became popular again.

I have just acquired the Aunt Grace's Flower Garden pattern which a friend of mine had made. She went with me and helped me pick out all the 30-40's fabric for it!! UFOs: Have a Sun Bonnet Sue in progress. Also a snowball and a Dresden star and a 2 Dresden plate and love star blocks but some are a lot of trouble with all those points and such. Have made one rag quilt out of flannel and just love it on my bed on these now cold nights! I like old-fashioned, modern, bright colors, batiks, so I guess I like them all; old or new! :D

I wonder when homespun fabric will come in again. Quilters destashing have a lot of it for sale at great prices. Another is quilts made from polyester fabric. Thank goodness homeless shelters like quilts made from it because it is almost indestructible .... as well as dog shelters.

The Dear Jane quilt pattern comes & goes just like all of the rest of them, but is still a favorite of most quilter's.
:D :D :D :D

The Sonoma dept at Kohls takes me back to high school days in the 1970's! Lurex sweaters, large cowl neck sweaters, dusty colors, smock tops. All so "yesterday". Yuck.

Folded Star quilt blocks are back! Check out Plum Easy Patterns. And chenille.

Takes about 25-30 years for 'old' to become 'new' again.

LOL....so guess I kept my clothes long enough... guess I wear what I have and like rather than follow "fashion"..rather spend $ on fabric...

One of our LQSs has an abundance of fabric. I met the owner and had quite a conversation. She stated there were some fabrics she wasn't crazy about but she buys according to the varied tastes of her clients/customer/friends. She sells a lot of fabrics whether she likes them or not! She sends emails asking for suggestions. Only a couple times did I go into her shop and she didn't have what I hoped for. She made a note and let me know that she ordered it because some one else may have wanted and not seen and not said anything. When she gets it in, she emails to let us aware of what is new in the shop.

I just don't understand the word "modern" quilting. When quilters started using rotary cutters; was that modern? No seriously!

Good business woman.

I'm confused when I see the term "modern quilting" applied because there are solids used. I thought that was "Amish quilting". lol

What I would like to know about popular quilts of today..who came up with all the loud crazy prints .Put together to be a quilt..Some are so busy it takes away from the quilt it's self..They do not have the homey feeling that a quilt use to have..But I know we all have different taste..

BettyGee 12-06-2014 07:04 AM

Chevrons seem to be everywhere again. Funny, I didn't care for them before and now I find myself drawn to them. As for the solids, I keep a supply of Moda's FQ in solids on hand all the time. They are invaluable in so many situations.

Okay, I just bought Anita Hallock's book from Amazon along with a great deal on 500 embroidery designs. I'm starting to incorporate embroidery into some of my quilt projects which I find really enhances the finished item. Of course I need another book like a hole in the head, but it keeps me out of the bars.

I am glad to see this!!

I think that this is the circle of life for wait a time and the new is the old just dressed up. Think of the Simplicity patterns that we threw away years ago! And I gave my daughter a good pair of shoes for her birthday at 64, what she picked out for work was what my mother wore for everyday in the 1930s...but at ten times the price. I am sneaking up on 89 so have hopes pretty soon I will be back in style. Why should quilts be any different?

I also have a lot of homespun and am thinking about cutting it up and making a scrap quilt. A lot of it is tan and white, which I think will make a restful quilt or a very boring one!

RainydayQuilter 12-06-2014 04:41 PM

In this area the biscuit or puff quilts are making a come back.
