I have several strips of my background fabric that measure 2 7/8". (I cut too many for a previous block) Can I cut the small (outside) triangle lengthwise on them to use up these strips? I am making 4 1/2" blocks. I hope you understand what I'm asking.

You mean to place at the end of a row to create a straight edge?

As long the shape/template (I can't remember if it comes with a separate ruler for that piece) fits on the fabric, sure.

Unless...the background fabric is directional and having it go into different orientations might be jarring to look at. But, otherwise, I don't see why not.

Technically I would be working my way up the strip with the long straight side of the ruler along the straight edge of the strip and the short straight side at the bottom edge. Where the fold is. (until I cut it off) Thanks for the info.
It is not directional.

Ah, no, what I was asking about was if the shape you wanted to cut out from those strips was the piece for the end of the row of hexagons - to make that a straight edge.

That's one of the first rulers I ever bought. And I always forget I have it and just end up cutting with the longer ruler.
 Typical.

Good luck on your project.
