I have to cut 80 HST and 80 QST and sew one of each together to make 80 units. I've never made QST's before except when I made hour glass blocks once. When you make the QST, are all 3 sides the same measurement or is there one side different than the other two? I just want to make sure I sew the QST to the proper side of the HST. The diagram isn't really very clear. Just thought I'd ask your opinions.

Hi Melissa :D , I just did a tute on these, it may help http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/8342.page If that isn't specific enough are you able to tell us what size your finished units need to be or if you can post a pic of what the units need to look like, then some one or myself would be able to give you more specific help, would be happy too :D , cheers

I actually bookmarked all of your tutorials for future reference. I didn't want to lose that valuable info!

I'm not talking about blocks made of 2 half square triangles. I made 40 square in a square. I followed the directions given and I had to cut 40 hst out of squares and attach 1 on 2 opposite ends of a square. The next step was to cut 40 more and attach them on the other 2 opposite sides to finish with a square in a square. I'd never seen that particular block before, but it was pretty cool when it was completed.

I called the quilt shop that gave out the directions (it's a mystery quilt). The gal said when it comes to the QSTs, know that you are making the first half of flying geese. Once she said that, the diagram in the "clue" made sense. I said that while I couldn't remember what it was, I knew that there was a shortcut to making flying geese. She said to stick to the pattern. It may not be the shortcut, but at least I would learn the old fashioned way. She must be one of those people that doesn't cut corners. But I get how to make it now. I have to cut 80 HST and 80 QST and attach 1 QST on the right side of each HST. When I do it, I'll probably post a picture because the more I read that, the less sense it made and I know what I'm talking about. I'm hoping to work on them tonight, so I'll be able to post a pic soon.

Thanks Shelly for the link and doing the tutes in the first place. They are really informative and they are explained well enough that even a beginner like me understands!!

A QST will have one side longer than the other 2. Equilateral triangles would join together to form hexagons, not squares. Is this what you were asking?

I'm totally lost - when you get some made, let's all see a picture!!!

PRETTY PLEASE!

Mmmm, That sounds interesting, sorry I got the wrong end of the stick before. Sounds like you're making some thing like this (see pic) wonder what they call half a flying goose  (A) Sounds interesting, wonder what you're going to be using that piece to make, keep us posted I luv a good mystery. If you were to add another 1/2 sq triangle to the other side that would give you a flying geese unit (B), so that's probably what the lady ment when she said it was like making the first part of flying geese. Probably best to stick to instuctions for now. but please let us know how it's going. I'm very curious

Ooops just had to change the pic, straight grain needs to be on the outside edges

Ooops sorry bout that

Melissa, which shop's mystery quilt? I'll try to run by and get a copy. I may not be able to decipher it either, but I think I know someone who can help us out

mpeters1200 07-18-2008 07:04 AM

Roben, I'm not sure where you are located, but the shop giving it out is in Omaha, NE.

Shelly, you are right on about the diagram. Once I have 80 "half geese" done, I have to cut 80 more HST and finish the flying geese blocks. I thought it was a bit odd to call them "half geese" but once you add the other HST it makes sense.

Once I have them made, I'll post a pic. The next "clue" comes out next Saturday so it may have to wait a bit.

Roben 07-18-2008 07:45 AM

I'm just across the river - I'll be heading into Omaha tonight or tomorrow to pick up some things, so it won't be a problem to have an excuse to go to one of the quilt shops  DH will just use the trip as an excuse to eat out :D

Wow...I didn't realize you were so close. The store is Country Sampler at 120th and Center on the north side of Center next to Burger King. The pattern is called Guilty as Charged and you can get all 3 clues (so far) at the cutting desk towards the back left side of the store.

The pattern they are doing is free and they are hoping you want to spend a mint on their high dollar material. I got all my material at Walmart, but I dutifully go every 2 weeks to get my clue. I can't wait until next spring when they do the BOM. Their fabrics are such high quality and it's 5.00 for the year if you keep up. They always end up so pretty!!

Feel free to pm me if you need anything. If you like Chinese there's a good chinese place with a make-your-own grill just east of the shop (next to JoAnn's fabrics) at 85th and Center. I don't think the Country Sampler is doing the same mystery quilt. It wasn't really clear in their newsletter. If you have any problems getting the back clues let me know.

This is why our board members rock! Thanks so much - the last couple of trips in, I've skipped the Country Sampler so now I have a great excuse to go! (This is the store I wrote about in a previous post, with gads of eye candy all over the walls and the cool long arm setup.) Both of my Viking dealers are in that neck of the woods, and the gal I'm thinking of for help is Angela from Classic Viking Sewing - she quilts like a mad woman! I have to stop at Joann's anyway, so maybe DH will go for Chinese.

I'll get the pattern info tonight or tomorrow, and see what's up. :D

Here is what I have gotten out of the instructions and the answers given me here and when I called the shop. Now, I have to make these exact units twice. This time with fabrics A & C, then again with fabrics B & D. Here's what I have so far.

First, I had to cut 20 squares out of the light blue that were 6 1/4" sq. Then, I put them on my mat and used my ruler and cut them diagonally TWICE making a total of 80 quarter square triangles or QST. This pic is supposed to show you that I cut on both diagonals at the line, but it's not really clear. Just pretend then.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...1216393182.jpg

Then, I had to cut 40 3 3/8" squares and cut those on the diagonal ONCE making 80 half square triangles or HST. Here you can see the triangles hanging out on the diagonal line after I finished cutting. Again, this didn't turn out like I wanted it to either, so just pretend you can see the individual triangles.

Here is where it gets a bit tricky. I did NOT press the QST in half. What I did was take the right side that I was going to sew the HST's to and pressed that in half. Then I pressed all the HSTs in half and they looked like this. Notice the lighter fabric has a big triangle and then a smaller, pressed piece. Also the light red has 2 size triangles, one unpressed, one pressed.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...1216472477.jpg

Then I sewed them all together so I have 80 that look like this.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...1216472464.jpg

I called the store and asked for a hint or two dealing with all these triangles. The gal mentioned that they were half geese. I do not have any idea what half geese are, but perhaps she meant the first half of geese would be finished. So I played around with my finished pieces and I THINK they'll eventually look like this. We'll find out with the next clue comes out next weekend.

Got my instruction sheets! A big thank you to Patrice and/or Admin for cleaning this thread up, too

The final pieces in the pictures look good! They do resemble half a flying goose (or geese - not enough coffee yet to distinguish the two!), and your count of 80 A & C (med. dark hst to light qst) and 80 B & D (dk hst to med light qst) is right. Coding the fabrics A, B, C & D is brilliant - they could easily get out of control, especially with clues coming out over time like this.

Give me a bit of time, and hopefully I can catch up to you - we can make our mistakes together! Then we'll have our own show  I'll be making trips up there anyway, since my dealers are so close and Country Sampler has all the Sulky Blendables threads :D

mpeters1200 07-20-2008 05:54 AM

It sews together pretty easily. Clue 2 and Clue 3 was a significant amount of cutting and piecing, but it worked itself out. Working on 2 at a time I can alternate between projects. The clues come out every 2 weeks on Saturdays and it may just take me the next week to repeat the "half geese" or whatever they are in time for the next clue when it comes out Saturday.

Patrice a/o Admin, thanks again for cleaning up!!

Looking good  Mystery quilts are such fun aren't they :P

mpeters1200 07-20-2008 07:46 PM

Once I get the whole top together, I'll post what it looks like.

Shelly Q, I've told all my friends about your tutorials. They are really great! I'll be looking for more! Hint Hint

ShellyQ 07-21-2008 11:24 AM

Thankyou Melissa, that's such a lovely compliment :P . Actually I'm sposed to be posting one tonight, that's if I can get my act together and get it finished :? So I spose I really ought to stop surfin and start workin

mpeters1200 07-21-2008 11:34 AM

Quilting isn't supposed to be work...it's supposed to be fun!!

ShellyQ 07-21-2008 11:40 AM

Lol, agree, but typing and editing, not so much
