Triangles verses Rectangles

Hi Everyone, been a long time since I have had a post on the Board. I have always loved how everyone has helped others when a quilting, sewing dilemma rears its head . I have made so far 3 zig zag or Chevron Baby Quilts. I need to make one more. I have made Three from Triangles. Really Tired of Triangles! A fellow quilter told me about he pattern using rectangles instead. Has anyone out there every made one using them? If so are they faster, easier than the triangles? I still have to cut for the last one, need to quilt and bind this one. So got some time to decide.

It is much easier in my opinion to use the rectangles. They can be strip pieced. You just have to lay them out on point. Your square will be made of two fabrics, so if your square is 5 by 5, you will cut your strips at 3".

thanks for the sizing, wesing.

I agree, rectangles are much better than triangles.

This link from Moda gives a good idea how to do it. They used charm squares, but I would use yardage cut in 2.5" strips (or whatever width you want)! Even without reading anything, the pictures make it clear how to assemble it.

Rectangles...good. Triangles...okay, but rectangles make life easier. Just sayin'.

It's easy with strips. I have done two this way.

Peckish, your quilt is gorgeous!

Oh, I really, really like your chevron quilt! So, spring/ summery looking.

Thank you! I was quite surprised when my 23 year old son asked for it, since the colors seem rather feminine to me. He said he liked the pattern, and the colors made him think of me. Well, how could I resist that??

Quiltngolfer 06-10-2017 01:43 PM

It's a beautiful quilt, Peckish!

I have no idea how to make this out of triangles.

Duh................thanks Peckish. (So embarrassing! That is why we have quilting friends). Your quilt is beautiful, btw, and I saved it to make one like it later.....my colors will never be that gorgeous though.

Peckish 06-11-2017 08:58 AM

Nothing to be embarrassed about, Jane. It's like those pictures where you look at it one way and see one thing, then look at it another way and see something else. Once you see the second image, it's hard to go back and see the first one!

Hoffman picked the colors of my quilt, not me. I used a Bali Pop called Cotton Candy for the colors, and an assortment of cream-colored batik strips.
