When I first started quilting 4 years ago, I got a paper sack full of 2.5 inch strips in an exchange at our guild. We were supposed to make a charity quilt...sort of a challenge. I had no idea that anything could be made from those strips, and I came to this board for help. I was such a beginner that I needed something really easy.

One lovely member here walked me through making this quilt. It ended up looking great, and it is still a pattern I go to because I like it. I do not know if it has a name, but you can duplicate it enough by looking at it a bit. Here is a picture, in case it appeals to you.

at my local quilt store I saw one that was one giant block, hers was done in reds but she just kept going round and round adding strips to all four sides, if a strip was not long enough to go the length of the side she just added on another like making binding, it was very nice, she did another where she started with a small panel and built a blue quilt around it.

What fun! I would make certain I had plenty of solid white or black and then start being creative. I have always found many scrappy patterns take a solid to "bind" the quilt together. But if you wanted to make one fast, you can't beat the jelly roll race.

One pattern I love is the split nine patch. My first one was 2 1/2" hst, 2 1/2" sq. Look at Bonnie Hunter's site and look for her leader/ender from last year. It's just like a log cabin and you can use all those layouts and more. I looked at Pam Lintott Jelly Roll Sampler Quilts when I got a lot of jelly rolls for presents last year and I thought they were really clever blocks.

And there is a jelly roll quilt website that sells them and has free patterns jellyrollfabrics.com

Wow Judi in Ohio, that is one of the most spectacular split 9P layouts I have ever seen. Love it!
