Trouble pieceing qst to sq
 

I am following a pattern for a "Four Patch Star"
Each 12" block is made up of four rows.
My trouble is with row 2.

Row 1 consist of 4-2" sqs, to be sewn together. No problem, I really like working with the little pieces. So I now have a center sq to be set on an angle.(square on a cornor)
Row 2 this is my trouble spot. This consists of 4-3&7/8" triangles (qst). They are to be place on the center sq, but when I add the second piece the outside edges of the two triangles are very uneven 1/8 to 1/4" off. I am adding my second row by matching the point of my triangle to the center point of the center sq.and matching the ends evenly, this leaves those little points, I have tried leaving them and cutting them neither seems to help.
I really like this pattern and want to use it, I also do not give up on challenges very easily, Hope someone can help.

I am doing something wrong but cannot figure out what. I looked at the tutorials, the only one I saw that would show these two pieces did not help me with my problem.

The pattern I am using only gives a picture of the block piecing.

When I made a Four Patch Star, there were 4 rows, but the block was made up of solid and printed squares, and HST's. I found this link to show how I made mine. I would think this would be a little easier than adding the triangles. But, I don't have problems making HST's either. Would this way work for what you are doing?

Thanks for the quick response. This would be much easier but I really like the twirling look that the triangles give to the star, that is why I chose this pattern, but I may well have to use the HST. Again thanks. The link is nice.

Have you completed a block as-is? I always think something is wrong with my triangles until I finish with the last piece, then I'm like "OHHH ok it does work when everything is put together".

Yes I have. I think maybe because they are cut on the bias (I think I got that right) they are losing their shape a little and it is going to be one one of those practice practice practice things. :)

I find when working with bias I have to starch, starch, starch the fabric before cutting it. Helps it keep its shape better. I learned the hard way the reason for starching until stiff. Good luck! Hope we'll get to see the finished project. Sounds neat!

fold your triangles in half and then find the center of the piece you are sewing it to and match the two middle points and pin out toward the end. It is normal to have about 1/4 to trim off at the tips; depending on the block.

Thank you becky crafts and romanojg, these two tips together have solved my frustrations. This sight is soooo, helpful. I am learning so much and everyone is very kind in their replies to each other. Again thanks. Yes, I will post a picture when I am finished. My gd (13) wishes it was done yesterday, but patiently awaits the day.
