Trouble quilting with 40 wt thread
 

I'm trying to machine quilt with Sulky Blendables 40 wt cotton thread and 50 wt thread in bobbin. I'm using a size 90/14 needle. My problem is occ skipped stitches and fairly frequent top thread breaking. I've tried to lower the top tension a little without making much difference. I'm using a walker foot also.
Have any of you had experience with this thread? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In my experience, Sulky cotton thread breaks very easily no matter what you do. I stopped using it for that reason. It literally shreds and is way more trouble than it's worth. Can't help you with suggestions to solve your current problem though. Sorry.

I've seen posts about Sulky being difficult. I would switch to a different 40 wt thread.

I just sent an email to the company about my problem. Because it's Friday, I probably won't hear from them until Mon/Tues if I'm lucky! I did just try a sample using the Blendables in the bobbin also but I really don't want to use that on the back of the quilt. Anyway, thanks for your inputs. On to another project for now.

sulky shreds like crazy, it is not the best quality cotton. The only thread brand for FMQ I found had no shredding was Superior King tut, and the only thread brand of cotton I haven't tried for FMQ is presencia, all others brands shred for me, even some of the high named ones like aurifil, so at this time king tut is the highest quality as they are truly egyptian grown long staple cotton. You want a long staple cotton for the least amount of shredding and there are few brands that really offer the 2 which is why many brands shred. Poly rarely shreds which makes it easier to use for FMQ so I like poly as well. Isacord and Superior make nice poly threads. Superior does offer try me spools for about half the price to see if you like their thread

Try using a thinner thread in the bobbin and looser tension. I agree Sulky isn't the best thread to use for machine quilting.

Try using a different size/type needle.

From my experience you should use the same weight thread in the bobbin and the top for less trouble.

Try to use a TOPSTITCH needle - #100/16 - it makes a huge difference.

I was going to suggest a topstitch 16 needle also.
