In the other thread with this title, we discussed the cost of making a quilt, but no one answered this question--that I noticed.

What are you all really spending on a quilt? Can some of you share what you are spending..and if you pull the fabric from your stash, it doesn't count as "free"--it counts at the price that you paid for the yardage--unless it is truly a scrap quilt of from your used clothing that you were going to throw away.

I think it might be an interesting experiment if some of us would actually keep track of 1. money spent/invested, and 2. hours spent on some of our quilts this year and then compile the information.

Does anyone have this information from your own data...and once again, unless someone else GAVE you the fabric saying that fabric from your stash is "free" isn't playing fair--it's what you paid for the fabric when you put it there--not market value now. :)

Personally, I buy a lot of my fabric at estate/yard sales. Usually it isn't more than $1 yard. So unless I making a special quilt for someone I can make the top for very little. But I do have to buy batting and thread. Then if I pay to have it quilted then I am $$ poor.

Well that is what I think would be an interesting study. I know that prices vary around the country as well as whether or not you pay for long arming, do it yourself, or hand stitch it.

Do you have a chance to have a stash of "thread"?

my last quilt of pre cut blocks was 264, 42.50 batting, 10 yards at 11.50 laq 165. no wonder my bunnie says slow down lol....but my family loves it and says its the best yet to come down the pike

I don't even think about the cost of this addictive hobby.

It brings me so much pleasure, I don't even consider the cost.
(but, please understand, that I'm retired, kids are grown...etc. :mrgreen: )

I will be brave and give a realistic answer. I make LOTS of quilts for co workers for gifts, occasionally commissioned (along with my friend who is also member on our quilt board). I just had to figure out the cost for two quilts both approx 63x63, okay now I purchased all the fabric at joann's With coupons including batting and thread (sale or coupon)

Fabric $5 a yard x 12 yards= $60
Thread = $10 (high est, but I use sulky)
Batting = $20 (queen packaged warm & natural)
Total materials only= $100 ( with tax)

Our time to piece, quilt and add love = PRICELESS

Not counting labor?? I make mostly queen or twin quilts... One twin was about $75 in fabric and $90 for an all over quilting (sent out). A queen was $45 in fabric, $35 in backing, and $250 for custom stitching (sent out). Another twin was $95 in fabric, $30 in batting, and I haven't decided if I'm going to send it out, or do it myself... they get expensive quick!!!
