Trying to find foundation paper for New York Beauties
 

I've been trying to find some foundation paper for New York Beauties. I have freezer paper but I would like something thinner. I would like to buy it online but when I go to the search engine and put in "foundation paper", it doesn't come up. Does anyone know any place online that sells thin foundation paper. I can't use newspaper as one of my fabrics is white. Thanks.

You don't want "foundation" paper, you want paper-piecing paper. I learned this the hard way. I bought some June Tailor foundation paper at Joann's and discovered that it does not tear. It's meant to be left permanently in the quilt. You want to make sure the package says it's paper-piecing paper and tears easily.

Having said that, I prefer to use vellum that I get from office supply stores. Carol Doak also sells her own brand of paper that is good for tearing away.

JCrow, have you tried exam table paper from a medical supply store? I use it all the time. It's easy to see through to trace out your patterns, easy to sew through and removes very easily. The downside is that I don't think you can put it through a printer unless you put it on another sheet of paper to hold it. I know it's much cheaper than vellum and readily available as single rolls which last a long time.
I really like using it for quilting borders. I can cut it to the exact size and sew right through it.

I use really cheap copy paper. It's a bit more tip to remove , but the price is right.

I have use the Carol Doak paper and really like it

I have used two different types of paper for paper piecing. One is a roll of painters' masking paper; it's about 9" wide. It's a brownish color, but is thin enough to trace through. It can also be printed on with your home printer. It tears fairly easily for removal. The second type I have used is plain old white tissue paper, the sort that is used when wrapping gifts. This thin paper won't go through a printer, however.

You can find "newsprint" paper at many office supply stores for much less than the Carol Doak paper sets. I found it at Office Depot online for $5.99 for 500 sheets! That is what I will get when I run out of my last pack of CD paper.

But I often do use regular printer paper with a very small stitch.

I use lightweight translucent vellum 17#. Most vellum you find in the scrapbooking aisle is too thick. I found a paper store online and bought a ream of it when it was on sale. It goes through the ink jet printer and very easy to tear away without all the bits and pieces.

i buy the dirt-cheap doodle pads for kids. they are made from blank newsprint.
the only drawback is that they are a bit bigger than standard letter size paper so i have to trim the excess before i run them through my printer.

i like luvspaper's idea of buying it by the ream, though. if you can find it, i'll bet it's less expensive that way. :thumbup:

I have aquired many rolls of exam table paper. It is perfect! I have more than I can use. I can send a roll. There is some water damage on one end (that's how I got them) but I cut it as I need it.

For those of you who actually pay for newsprint, go get it from your local newspaper for FREE. Just walk in and ask for their end rolls.

Looks interesting - but rather pricey at almost $11 for 10 sheets...

I used the wash away but like the vellum better. I have used Carol Doak paper, George Siciliano's Foundation Stuff (which is the best newsprint I've used), deli paper, exam paper, leave in sheer poly, and just about all the specialty brand papers for paper piecing. I have a shelf of paper piecing papers of all kinds. I'm the type that once I get interested in something I am on a mission looking for what works best for me products. I usually grab the vellum.
