Tshirt quilts - batting or no batting?

Hello... my niece gave me a bunch of her tshirts from college and asked me to make a quilt from them. I had never made one before, so I was happy to give it a try. Now I have 2 quilt tops done and I am wondering about batting. Do I use batting or not? These have sashing so there is alot of cotton fabric with the tshirts. What do you guys think? I have some of the Warm and White (which is my favorite) and also have some of the cheap poly from WalMart

The quilts are going to have cotton backing. She didn't want fleece or flannel

I used Hobbs 80/20 to give a little dimension to my quilting on the 6 custom t-shirt quilts I have made. Either way, it is going to be a heavy quilt. Good Luck.

I used batting in mine, also. Quilter's Dream cotton. I wouldn't use poly in this type of quilt.

The necessity of batting would depend on the area of the quilt user. The southern areas, maybe not so much....northern areas, always use batting. The type of batting used should be one with a scrim or a larger area between quilting lines. Most t-shirts are more difficult to quilt across the printed areas, so I usually do straight line diagonals about 3-4" apart (it seems that straightlines with the walking foot works the best for me).

I've always used batting in t-shirt quilts, but it is a personal choice- some people don't. To me it ( pads) evens out all the seams so you don't feel or see them on the back. Besides I like soft, fluffy quilts that a nice batting provides. I usually use Hobbs 80/20 in t-shirt quilts.

Thank you for your replies. Looks like the vote for batting wins :)

My vote is for batting also. I've made 4 t-shirt quilts, all with sashing and used low loft batting.
