Tula Pink on Sewing with Nancy

While waiting for an appointment this morning I saw Tula Pink on Nancy Zieman's show. I didn't catch all of it as I didn't wait long. Anyway, Tula has come up with a prefect use for some of the beautiful pieces of fabric most of us have in our "scraps".

She cut rectangle of the pretty designs (flowers, birds, whatever), framed several with the same fabric, attached to a background then used something to fashion hanging wires so the "pictures" look as if hanging on a wall. I assume the "hanging wires" were bias cut pieces or maybe even braid or rick-rack. I missed that part.

I have some little seed packets, some small embroiderer pieces, some little kids scenery pieces all of which would make good "pictures".

Google "Tula Pink picture quilts" and you'll get a bunch of images in one link. The quilt I"m talking about is the last in the second row.

I saw that episode a couple of weeks ago. . . Loved it and love Tula Pink! She is one of freshest fabric designers out there and I love the fact that she is young and hip and just a little bit tattooed!

I think that Tula Pink is truly an up and coming designer with wonderful ideas.

nativetexan 02-02-2013 03:11 PM

the "hangers" were ribbons and she added fabric covered buttons to be the "nails".

Thanks. I didn't get to watch that part. This slow computer won't do videos or I'd be looking for this particualar one. Most of the stuff I've got for a picture quilt will be kids stuff------------like Sylvester & Tweety and some other kiddy prints.

Eva Knight 02-02-2013 04:58 PM

I loved the way she did that quilt. I'm thinking family pic's.wouldn't that be great to print photoes onto cloth and then make a quilt like that.

qltgrose 02-02-2013 06:46 PM

Thanks so much! I dont know why I didnt think of that, I am catching up with the latest episodes of Downton Abbey online...goin to watch it now ;)

Hummmmmmm---------I'd consider that for a wall hanging. A big wall hanging!

What a neat way to make a top. Interesting young woman. Really like the 2nd video.
Thanks for posting & thank you CarolynMT for the video links

These videos have made an impression on me for the way they are designed without measuring so much...the books shown are now on my list of purchasas...which, by the way is getting longer and longer..But I love Tula's method. hope to see more of these.

I really like seeing the fresh looking fabrics from Tula. I think she brings a new approach to her designs and quilts.

linda faye 02-03-2013 07:16 AM

I saw that episode. Very cute way to 'make pictures' by quilting.

Did you also see the Broken Dish quilt? I tried making a few of the Broken Dish blocks and am not sure I like them.

Another one was Stacked Blocks.....rectangles of different sizes and stacked randomly. Interesting and colorful to use larger scrapes.

Love Tula .. gonna get her books as well as any DVD's, she has a refreshing approach to her quilting and designing. I am a serious fan of Sewing with Nancy also. I have sewing Nancy for 20 years and love her ideas as well, her guests, and her tips.

Thanks for posting that. I watched that awhile back and liked the black/white quilt they were doing. I wrote down the directions but couldn't find them. Looks like fun.

Joining the ranks of those thanking you for the links! I didn't know Tula Pink before but I am now a big fan!!! Love her approach and creative thinking! Hugssssssss and smiles.

I happened to catch her on the show this week also - I love her idea of making specific pieces of fabric showcased to look like photos hanging by ribbons - it was adorable!
And did anyone notice that she has her name T-U-L-A P-I-N-K tattooed across the knuckles of both hands? Gotta love that!

Are JoAnn's coupons good for books? I may look there with a 40% coupon

MarleneC 02-03-2013 03:24 PM

I noticed the tatoo fingers also--believe it is her name--guess in case she forgets--my first impression was they looked like the type you see on hands of prisoners.

MarleneC 02-03-2013 03:25 PM

I was told you can use the coupons for books--I always forget.

ccthomas 02-03-2013 07:11 PM

I saw that episode and a little light went on. i have several covered bridge pieces of fabric and have been trying to think of a way to use them together. Since they are all different colors and sizes. I was having trouble coming up with a design. Now I think I can do it. Thanks, Tula.

milikaa1 02-03-2013 10:25 PM

I always record her shows and so glad I do, I have to two shows she did with Tula Pink, I think Tula is awesome and her patterns are so simple yet look stunning.

Wow! I'd be tempted to use a leafy green background. Let us see when you get it done.

GrannieAnnie 02-03-2013 10:38 PM

I finally muddled thru the video--------------watch 10 seconds, load 60 seconds @@

Anyway, I may try the "stacks" pattern, but not with a white background. Maybe a beige.
