You might want to try a darker tulle. It looks to me like the light silvery gray has lightened up the darks considerably causing you to lose a lot of detail. That's why it's a little blurry. A darker tulle would keep your darks dark which would keep your detail. I think even over the light areas, a dark tulle would be okay, it might slightly darken the lights, but probably not enough to make a difference.

Thank you all for your replies! I agree that maybe a different color tulle might be needed. This quilt is for my daughter who is a medical missionary in Africa and I really wanted it to be special :) I will go to JoAnns and see what they have... like Rob said, maybe a darker gray would keep more of the details.

I have found that light colored tulle washes away definition and pales and blurs lines. However, a single veil of black or navy tulle seems too enhance color richness. Perhaps changing tulle color will provide you with the answer to your dilemma. I'm not sure how a portrait quilt is constructed. With my art quilts, I "color" with fabric scraps that are glued between the lines of my design sketched on background fabric. The tulle holds all in place once quilted. Your portrait is incredible!

I have no advise, but your portrait quilt looks great! Be sure and share once quilted!!

I definitely am not an expert having never made anything so lovely, but I really feel the tulle has taken away the clarity and sparkle of your original piece. Hopefully a different color won't do that.

I'll be anxious toes it in a different tulle, it is beautiful.

There are different kinds of tulle and different densities. In my opinion, the tulle softens the picture. So I am a PRO TULLE advocate.

There were 2 quilts at the AQS show in G.R. using tulle. This is 1 of them It has a dark gray or black over the quilt.
