Tumbler Binding

I've been working on a tumbler for my parents. My mom chose the pattern and the colors (blue and white) and I'm debating what to use for the binding. Blue, white, or another contrasting color such as red. I would love to see some opinions. Here is a photo. http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...101_232332.jpg

I would choose a bright or deep blue similar to those in your quilt. Great job, very pretty!

Dark blue binding would be nice and it will stay clean looking longer. Pretty Tumbler top!

I would use a dark blue or a medium tan. Nice quilt! I love tumblers.

I used to think that bindings were mostly plain colors, but a really great colorist in quilting showed me that using a bold pattern with multiple colors that tie into the blocks is the way to go and I have never reverted back to ordinary. The binding is so narrow and this quilt has enough visual impact that something colorful and bold would be a great choice....go for it!

I would use a bright medium blue similar to the blue that is predominant in the quilt. But red would also look great!

StickyN 01-03-2015 02:17 PM

Definitely Red.

QuiltnNan 01-03-2015 02:55 PM

i vote for dark blue

nativetexan 01-03-2015 03:18 PM

I would pick a lovely paisley print in those colors for a border.

A med blue....

coopah 01-03-2015 05:11 PM

Use the darkest color in the quilt.

memepat 01-03-2015 05:42 PM

Since your mom chose blue and white I would pick either the medium or dark blue. Love the quilt. Mom will be proud whatever color you decide yo use.

red and blue

Boston1954 01-03-2015 06:15 PM

I would go with one of the blues that you have used. Red might pull attention away from the wonderful center.

ctrysass2012 01-03-2015 08:22 PM

Since Mom chose blue & white, I'd stick with a darker blue. As was posted earlier, you could go with a blue/white paisley.

earthwalker 01-03-2015 09:19 PM

I think the darkest blue in the top.

JuliaC 01-04-2015 04:08 AM

Love your quilt. I would go with dark blue.

Sarabela 01-04-2015 04:51 AM

Thank you everyone! It seems that dark blue is the majority and my daughter, who has an eye for color, agrees so I think I'm going to go with dark blue.

When I cannot decide how to border or bind I lay the quilt where I will see it frequently throughout the day. I put the colors/materials I am considering under the edges of the quilt and I look at it for a few days. I change up the combinations and remove or add until I am satisfied and it feels right.

What a lovely quilt, so easy on the eyes, nothing glaring about it. I'd use the darker blue or another of the darker solid colors you have in the quilt. I'd choose a color that complements the overall tumblers, a color that blends in with it all. What a wonderful gift you've created. Blessings, Angela

I read over the suggestion you were given by the colorist and I can see what you mean. I tend to be conservative in my color choices, but I'll take the advice given you. Thanks for sharing, Angela

I agree that a bright or deep blue would look great as a binding.

Tudey 01-04-2015 06:59 AM

Blue or red would be nice. I would avoid a white binding because it will show the dirt faster.

kathdavis 01-04-2015 07:44 AM

I'd go with a maroon binding.

Mariposa 01-04-2015 07:51 AM

Maybe a dark blue, or even scrappy with darker blues.....

quiltinglady-1 01-04-2015 08:29 AM

Wonder why I'm not seeing the picture of the quilt??? Hmmmm

Susann 01-04-2015 09:01 AM

I'd vote for dark blue but would definitely ask your mom what she's prefer. After she picked out the pattern & material, I wouldn't want to put on something she didn't care for.

Jeanne S 01-04-2015 09:11 AM

I would go with a medium or dark blue that coordinates with the tumbler fabric. Bindings pick up dirt/body oils first so for a quilt that will be 'used' I always try to make bindings on the dark side.

kathidahl 01-04-2015 09:30 AM

I agree that the dark blue that looks sorta like a polka dot pattern would be a great choice.

squires1042 01-04-2015 09:31 AM

I like my bindings to coplement the wit a darker shade that you have in the quilt would work well for the binding

MargeD 01-04-2015 09:32 AM

It's a beautiful quilt and I think picking up one of the darker blues in the tumblers would finish it off quite nicely.

carolynjo 01-04-2015 01:57 PM

Red gets my vote. I think it will make all the tumblers pop.

MarleneC 01-04-2015 03:52 PM

A red/blue combination would look good with the blue predominant--a bright perky blue/red combo.

WMUTeach 01-05-2015 04:57 AM

I would go with the medium to dark blue. It will set off the colors mush as your suggestion of red would do. Yet, the dark to medium blue will blend and complement the colors of the quilt.

Vat 01-05-2015 08:14 AM

The dark blue would be nice to stop the Tumblers from falling off. Ha Ha ! ! !

matraina 01-05-2015 07:58 PM

Wow, that's a big quilt top. I think dark blue would be a good choice also. The quilt is beautiful!!!

Sew Krazy Girl 01-05-2015 11:52 PM

For the binding I would select a blue-green or a blue-purple; OR a pure red would really be outstanding.

caroline1989 01-06-2015 12:11 AM

Wow what a beautiful quilt!!! I want to make one for our bed in the same colors but different pattern :)
I would choose dark blue.

ManiacQuilter2 01-06-2015 07:08 AM

I usually prefer to use a darker color because the binding will be the first to show any dirt and wear.

fangman 01-07-2015 09:48 AM

I would use a dark blue, I think it would look like a frame.
