I'm trying to figure out how to say this. When I made a tumbler quilt, I started seeing the same thing - and then I realized the first row has to start with a set with the longer side on top and the next row has to start with the smaller side on top. I ended up having to take a set from the second row, split it and put one on each end of the second row. Hope this is clearer than mud.

Thank you all for your help. Now I think I know what what to do.( alot of quality time with my seam ripper)

Am I understanding that you did not sew the same length sides together when you sewed the pairs? Or did you sew the same size side without flipping? Maybe you could do something like a fan in the corners like https://myquiltprojects.wordpress.com/2018/02/ There is something Missouri Star calls a Chevron Tumbler where they are sewn so that the second row doesn't start with the opposite end on top.
In addition to the Tumbler shown above here are some other variations - https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...r-t302963.html https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...t-t299241.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REF3Z_pIqHc Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. I did mine in rows and then sewed the rows together.

Here's a photo of some unquilted Christmas mug rugs made of tumblers. To square them up, I cut off the sides slightly.
