Tumbler Quilt Question ?
 

I am planning to make a Scrappy Tumbler quilt cutting my fabrics on the small Accuquilt Go die which measures 3" finished. I am planning to do dark /light every other block. Can anyone tell me how to figure how many pieces I will need for a queen sized quilt ? If you have made one what size and how many pieces did you use. I would love to see pictures for inspiration.

What I would do is first figure out the dimensions of the queen sized quilt you want to end up with. Then sew two tumblers together.

Measure the top edge after they are sewn and subtract 1/2" (for seam allowances). That will give you a width measurement for two tumblers. Say you want your quilt 100" wide and the two tumblers sewn together measure 6" wide (after subtracting the 1/2"). 100 divided by 6 = about 17 sets of 2 tumblers per row which = 34 tumblers per row. (33 tumblers might be closer to 100" wide.)

Measure the height of the tumblers and subtract 1/2" for seam allowances. I imagine this will be 3". If you want your quilt to be 120" long, then 120 divided by 3" means you will need 40 rows of tumblers. 40 rows times 34 tumblers per row would = about 1,360 tumblers.

Someone else may have more accurate measurements for you, but this is how I would approximate for myself.

Edit: You may want to decide before starting whether you want the finished quilt to have a zigzag edge like the the one at the website, or whether you want to simply cut off the side tumblers after you are finished piecing so you have straight sides to bind. Personally, I like things easy so I would do the latter.

I'm having the same problem with figuring how much material I need to make a queen sized Rag Quilt, I think I might try to use Prisms idea, I have the 5 1/4 Go Rag Die.

OK oldtisme, after you subtract you 1/2" seam allowance on a Rag quilt, you are going to have 4.25" finished square. If you don't put a border on, queen in width is normally around 90" So you will need 22 squares across. The length is normally 108". Then you will need 26 in a row. 25x22 is 572 squares. That is a lot of squares and you need twice as many if you start to count the backing !! GOOD LUCK !!!

I recently made a scrappy tumbler with the larger Accuquilt die and used lights in between each one. I didn't plan the size, just kept going. Here's a photo.

Thanks for the reply. that sounds about right to me too. I saw the picture you posted above but it is a smaller quilt and she never said how many pieces she cut.

Beautiful quilt !!!!!! I am sure it worked up quickly with the larger tumblers. I am going to make one of these for my brothers with my dad's shirts as a memory quilt.

she does say her finished quilt is 92"x97", that she has 39 tumblers per row and 39 rows. She says if her math is correct, it took 1,287 tumblers; however, on my calculator 39x39 = 1,521 tumblers! She did say if she had it to do over again, she would have used an even number of rows (not sure why). It does look as if the tumbler size she used is the 3" finished size.

If you are referring to the photo in this thread, it look to me as if it is 13 tumblers per row and 10 rows; about 130 tumblers. However, she did use the larger size Accuquilt tumbler die.

Sounds like I will need tocut a lot of tumblers, but that's ok. I have lots of fabric and love scrappy quilts?
