Twister Quilt
I am a late comer to the twister quilt craze. I have cut 8" blocks and sewed them together like i want them to be, what size square do i need in order to maximize the 8" of material I have made the blocks from?

You will need to make one - the one I bought for the little Twister is for 5 inch blocks measures 3.5 inches square - the larger one for 10 inch blocks measured 8 inches square. The lines are drawn 3/4 inch in from each edge for Little Twister and 2 inches in on the Larger one.

I have yet to use that little Twister. Thanks for the reminder :)

Apparently there is an in between size (6" or 6 12" ) What you can do to see which size will work is to make yourself a template, drawing the lines at the right angle (assuming you have a ruler on hand). I used a large piece of paper and drew a bunch of squares together to my finished size square (in your case 7 1/2") and laid the template down all around the square to make sure it didn't overlap. |
Hmm, you usually get or make the template, then cut the appropriate size squares... Looks like you are going to have to do a bit of experimentation.

The first twister I made was done with a plastic template; a square of plastic marked with an X to fit over the corner seams in the panel of squares. We traced around the template and cut with scissors.
The next one I made, I used my rotary cutter for most of it. I cut each line almost to the ends, but not quite. The rest was done with scissors after a lot of it was cut with the rotary cutter. This was much easier than all scissors work. Doing it this way leaves much less waste. You just have that little square left in the middle of each block which I used for a checker board border. |
