Yes, you can make your own. I just used a square ruler from my collection and placed 2 pieces of clear tape across the top. I drew the lines on the tape with a sharpie. It worked okay and If you just want to do a wallhanging or tablerunner it's fine. If I wanted to make a quilt, I would buy the tool. It has cute little feet on the underside to keep the tool steady for cutting. At the time I made mine, I could not find the tool at my LQS.

are you asking about templates for using the rotary cutter or to mark around"
For rotary cutter, many are going to Lowes or Home Depot and having them cut out of acyrlic
For home use - marking and then cutting, I get the template plastic from quilt shops, JoAnns etc.
So need to know what kind you mean.

what are the measurements if you want to use a 61/2 ruler?

In another thread this was discussed and I made note of the following thinking I would have a play at creating my own template.

"For the twister ruler :
The squares are always 1.5 inches square larger than your template......3.5 inch template =squares are cut 5 inches square... "

Unfortunately I did not make a note of the source of the information, so herein ends my knowledge on the subject.

I go to my local plastics company with a drawing or printout of what I want the finished template to be. They then cut it out of acrylic plastic.

For the twister I would just mark each side with a pen or painters tape at the appropriate places and then I'd be ready.

I have used old Xray film in the past to make my own templates. The only hitch was that I had to destroy all the patient ID info, which was easy to do.

I have made them out of the no-melt template plastic -- I took classes several years ago (before the twister rulers came out) and we made the templates as part of the class.
