TWO machines and a love story!

I've been shopping for a new SM for some time. I thought I had done all my homework and had just about settled on one. Then I stopped by an unknown (to me) dealer and discovered the Brother Innov-is VQ3000 "Dreamweaver". (This is the "twin sister" of the Baby Lock Crescendo over which I had done rather a lot of oohing and ahing, but decided was just too rich for my blood. I'm also in the market for my first EM and had a set amount to spend on both.) After a number of demos and testing and some further unnecessary drooling, just for fun, I asked for a price. Her quote was far less than the Baby Lock, and Brother is running a promotion thru Jan. 28th. That night I told my investor (DH) all about my adventure.

Long story short, we went back yesterday, and I came home with not only the Dreamweaver, but a Brother PE-780D EM as well! I think I chose well--DH, that is. He has always been my greatest supporter and far more willing to spend big bucks on my equipment than I am. He said I deserve a machine worthy of my talent! What a man! And hopefully the machines will be a good choice as well.

I have never owned a TOL machine, so I'm looking forward to discovering all it can do. So far it is out of the box--no easy task, this is a behemoth of a machine with an 11.25" harp. The clock is set (still wondering about this since I mostly prefer NOT to watch the clock when I'm sewing...must be a way to disable that feature), a bobbin is wound and the needle is threaded. Now, how long do we sit here and stare at it and wonder where to start?!

You are a lucky lady to have such a generous husband. Mine is generous but we don't have the funds, so I am content for now with my ten sewing machines and one embroidery machine. All bought used and most all vintage.

Stitchnripper 01-20-2013 08:31 PM

That sounds wonderful!! I had a demo of the DreamWeaver and it is a nifty machine for sure. Keep us posted on your progress!!!!

Dolphyngyrl 01-20-2013 08:37 PM

Enjoy. I have the combo, and am so in love I think my hubbies jealous

mighty 01-20-2013 09:36 PM

Awesome, enjoy!!!!!!

LoisM 01-20-2013 09:37 PM

You're a VERY lucky lady! Enjoy yourself to high heaven, woman!

justflyingin 01-21-2013 12:17 AM

That is fantastic! So glad your husband is supportive. I'd never had a TOTL machine before I bought a Janome 7700 two years ago, October (2010). It really is fun to sew with a machine that can do so much and makes it so easy.

But I was also overwhelmed a bit at the beginning. Took me a couple of days just looking before I sewed with it. :) My husband didn't understand why I didn't dig right in and just start. :) I've made up for it since then, however!

hopetoquilt 01-21-2013 03:16 AM

There are some things that are just worth sinking the money into and a good machine is important to have. So glad you were able to get the machines you love. Grab some scraps and start playing on the machine.

mimiknoxtaylor 01-21-2013 03:25 AM

What a great DH! My DH is supportive but not quite up with yours -yet :D
For Christmas he did get me an Accuquilt Go & bucks to buy dies. So he's also a keeper

GailG 01-21-2013 03:34 AM

I looked in abbreviations and didn't find these so I'll have to ask the question.. In post#1 TOL was mentioned and in Post #7, TOTL. What do they mean?

Congratulations on your new machines and on having such a supportive and sweet DH! I'm yearning for a new machine (Janome 6300 or 6400) and all my DH says is "and where are you going to put it?":D

gramajo 01-21-2013 04:29 AM

TOL and TOTL both mean top of the line machine.

Yarn or Fabric 01-21-2013 05:19 AM

Congratulations! I agree, hubby is a keeper :D
I say jump right in and create something from scratch. Don't even finish off an old ufo, make something brand spanking new, even if it's just a potholder or a table runner. Something quick and easy for instant gratification so that you can have a completely new project made on your new machine... and you can add some embroidery to it as well!

Scraplady 01-21-2013 05:54 AM

I just discovered this machine will sew sideways! How did I miss that in the demos? I have tried out a number of the decorative stitches, wrote my name in 3 fonts, 2 diff. sizes. The control screen seemed a bit intimidating at first, but it is really very user-friendly. I can save up to 5 different settings for EVERY stitch in the memory so I won't have to fine tune everything EVERY time I start to sew. I have a baby quilt all basted and ready to go, I can't wait to try FMQ on this machine with all that space--and three different quilting feet. And it came with a huge extension table!

sewmom 01-21-2013 06:11 AM

If the shop where you bought your machines offers free classes, please take them up on it! That is what they are there for. They can help you learn all about your new machine. Enjoy!

TinkerQuilts 01-21-2013 06:44 AM

I remember bringing home my Brother emb machine two years ago. Got it out and thought I was going to start embroidering. How very wrong! I sat and looked at it, read a little of the manual, then packed it back up for the class two days later. They got me started (and addicted) and I still go to the monthly embroidery class when I can and learn new techniques, and it's such a great group of ladies - have fun with yours!

vondae 01-21-2013 06:54 AM

Congratulations, you have hit the jackpot. Hubby wise, that is! We are so blessed when we have someone at our side who is supportive of what we do. He deserves an extra squeeze & a big smooch. (But, then he probably has someone on his side who does the same for him.) It will be no time & you will be putting many a mile on those machines. Enjoy the learning curve & keep smiling as you do it.

I have a Brothers Quattro 6000D and I live it!! I have owned Brother machines for over 17 years and never have had a but of trouble with them. I have owned three. The first one burnt in a fire and went out and replaced it with another. I have had that one since 2000. I just sold it last week because I upgraded to the Quattro over a year ago. It was just sitting around. I hated to part with it. Good lunch with your new babies.

callen 01-22-2013 06:11 AM

What a "Dream" of a husband. You are truly blessed. As for the clock, my Bernina also comes with a clock & I can set an alarm to go off at a specified time. Like you, I thought, what do I need that for BUT I get so involved sewing sometimes I forget to put supper on so I set the alarm & voila, it reminds me to put things away & get at supper.
Congrats on your new machines.

solstice3 01-22-2013 06:18 AM

congrats on a stellar DH and machine

quiltmom04 01-22-2013 06:36 AM

Did you get a guide class or two on these machines? Your dealer should do that for you, and it might give you some ideas for projects to start on.

I googled it and they both mean top of the line.

I have a brother se400 and would absolutely love to have a Dreamweaver!! You are so fortunate!

My hubby is a lot like that, too. It's so nice to the loving support of your DH. :)

TOL means Top Of the Line usually referring to an expensive, well-made machine.

damaquilts 01-22-2013 07:28 AM

Hmm I wonder how much I would get on trade in , I have a Brother QC 1000. LOL

Grace MooreLinker 01-22-2013 07:32 AM

Just hoop a piece of cloth and start a test run and you'll naver look back
My Christmas present to myself was a Innov'-IS VE2200 that is the Dreammaker XE boy do I enjoy embroidering on it.
watch out don't stand to close or you might have a rose on your shirt sleeve ((:)) enjoy both your new machines .

oldtnquiltinglady 01-22-2013 08:10 AM

It looks like you might have bought your machine in/near Birmingham (my husband and I pass through there often on our road trips), so my question to you is, where is the store where you bought your wonderful machines. I got money for part of my Christmas and it is burning a hole in my pocket, plus DH said "guess what the temp is in Biloxi" with the temp here in middle TN hovering at freezing and windy......we are SOOOOOOO ready to escape. I told him I know someone who'll tend to the pets, so we are thinking forward in that direction. BTW (took me a spell to figure that one out, in reference to your TOPL) sincere congratulations on your acquisitions--enjoy, enjoy, enjoy......

Cheshirecatquilter 01-22-2013 08:32 AM

The easiest way to disable the clock display is with a little piece of carefully cut and applied blue painter's tape. I used to recommend black electrical tape, but it leaves a sticky residue. :)

JoanneS 01-22-2013 09:37 AM

I felt the same way when I bought my TOTL Pfaff last Christmas. My Dh badgered me until I finally bought it!

MargeD 01-22-2013 10:13 AM

You are one lucky lady and he is definiely a keeper. Congratulations.

cowgirlquilter 01-22-2013 11:18 AM

Love the love story and the fact you now have two machines......yay!

nstitches4u 01-22-2013 12:18 PM

Congratulations on your new machines---and on picking a great husband! lol My DH is also very supportive of my quilting/embroidery addiction. He is a great enabler! lol He worked in computers his whole career (45 years before retiring). I got him interested in digitizing embroidery designs. He now has a bigger embroidery machine than I do---10 needle BabyLock Enterprise. He likes doing one of-a-kind designs for gifts for friends and family. There are a lot of baseball caps around town with unusual and funny sayings and designs embroidered on them. Now that we are both retired, we enjoy our hobbies. I can't imagine how anyone could be bored after they retire. We can't find time to do all the things we want to do. I don't know how I ever had time to work!

Carol34446 01-22-2013 01:01 PM

Good for you, I am sure you will really enjoy it. Will be waiting to see what you make with it. Went to brother web site and what a machine the VQ3000 is. At 66 I would not spend the money when I have so many machines, but I am so happy for you.

gramma nancy 01-22-2013 02:02 PM

Congrats! As to what to do, when my DH bought me a beautiful Bernina 440 QE a few years ago, I learned to use it by making 37 pillow cases for the million pillow case challenge. Not only did the local homeless shelter get a bunch of pillow cases, but I learned a lot and really put the machine through its basic paces. When I took it in for its first (free) checkup, the repair people were surprised by how much sewing time it had on it already. No kidding! Making 37 pillow cases is not a task for a single evening.

nancia 01-22-2013 03:25 PM

i am sooooo wanting to buy an embroidery machine! i have the innovis 2000, and never even considered i might want to embroider. a friend gave me a brother se400 but no cd, and i haven't tried it yet. how hard can it be, right? but it has me intimidated!!
congrats on your new machines and your wonderful husband!!

sewdamncute 01-22-2013 05:52 PM

That is wonderful!

QandE2010 01-22-2013 07:12 PM

Congratulations on your two "babies". Once you start using it, you won't want to stop. My Bernina series 8 - 830 sewing/ embroidery machine is the only thing that will make me skip lunch. LOL

hpylady 01-23-2013 06:20 AM

Congrats and so happy for you! I know the feeling! You are going to have fun, fun, fun! I bought a Serger from Hancocks this summer. It is out of the box, took pictures close up of the threading, you know with the colored threads. It is still sitting there on my sewing desk just starring at me. It looks so complicated. I told myself that I will try it out when I have more time to reseach on how to get started. I can make a mountain out of a mole hill! lol.
