What wonderful gifts! The quilt is going to be beautiful, post pics when you finish.
|
Nice surprises!
|
I agree that minimizing the sashing and reusing should make a lovely quilt. Enjoy your treasures!
|
Wonderful surprise!!!
|
I fully appreciate your excitement. She has gifted memories to you, not just things.
|
What wonderful surprises! The quilt and the machine will be cherised treasures for you. Linda

How wonderful for you!!! Stories like that are so much fun to read.
|
Isn't that wonderful! :) My grandmother had a quilt with these butterflies - maybe she used the same pattern. :) I like your idea of making the sashing narrower, too.
And your grandmother's machine - how LOVELY!!! I will hope that it's gorgeous and completely functional and much better than you expect! |
What wonderful surprises! I look forward to seeing the finished quilt. Your idea of reducing the sashing is great. Enjoy the machine. It is a treasure to receive something that belonged to your grandmother.
|
How wonderful.

Awe, what a lovely quilt! We had found quilt blocks that my grandmommy made that were pretty ratty. We are framing them and each of us girls are getting one! I can't wait! TFS!!
|
Both surprises are great. I love the butterfly quilt and you are right to take it apart and respace the butterfly blocks and save the yellow fabric to fnish the quilt. Can't wait to see your new machine. The oldies are most of the time the godies. Enjoy the machine and enjoy working on your family heirloom qult.

Wonderful news. Family items are such treasures!

Hi Vicki...I cant wait to see what you do with this quilt.....a lot of options for sure.....I love getting things from our grandparents, aunts....their work was and is superior because most of it was done hand made...wonder what they would say if they saw the sewing machines today that we have?...........anyways have fun and keep us up-dated....thx Trish
|
I also think it's a good idea of making the sashing smaller and using the extra as an outer border.
What a great thing to get your grandmother's machine. When you get it, if you need help with it, just go on the vintage sewing machine thread and you will find a lot of help of all kinds concerning it. I am so happy for you in getting the two great gifts. Janis |
Vicki, I think things from our family should be the most prized. They give us the warmest of feelings even if we didn't have the chance to know them. I have machines from my Aunt and Uncle, she sewed on them and he fixed them. There is no feeling like it. Congradulations!

Oh! It is beautifu! If it were left up to me, I would not disturb your Aunt Lois's piece work. The wide sashing would be great for feather detailing. I can just see it right now in my mind. It would be beautiful! But, I can see what you are saying too. That would also be a good thing if you don't mind disturbing her quilt. I'm sure she'd be proud of anything you do out of appriciation of her quilt and not just putting it away undone. Oh! Was it worn or had holes in it here and there, from what I see it is in good condition. Anyway, please post pictures of it when you complete it. Beautiful!

What a great quilt. It's so nice to get family heirlooms.I like the idea you have to change the sashing, that way the border will be exactly the same. Thanks for sharing your story and the pictures. Mary

What a wonderful day!

WOW! I'm so glad for you. What a lovely story to share. :)
|
What a great blessing for you! I also agree that smaller sashing would look nice and it will give you a connection to the family member who started it. Good luck
|
That's great Just love the butterflies

Oh how wonderful for you!! I have my grandmother's treadle sewing machine. She had died when I was two years old. My mom passed away and I inherited it. Have to put some work into it to get it to sew again (needs new belt) but I am so thrilled to have it. I want to honor her by fixing it and actually sewing on it. I totally understand your joy.

There is something so special about old quilts. people had less but they seemed happier. Family was the center of everyones world. Fabrics were from worn out or too small clothse, one made do and used it up, there wasn't huge debt cause no one had any money to get into debt. Quilts were a necessity not a luxury.

Great surprises! All the best!

I, too, cherish well used items. Can't wait to see your new machine. Well, it is new to you. I think some people treasure things like this because it reaffirms the circle of life...your grandma sewed and you also sew. Hope you will have someone in your life who will also appreciate these treasures.
