I use crochet thread and dont forget to do square knots. You tie one way and then the opposite way. It helps to keep it tighter.

unkin123 11-11-2010 09:39 AM

I use Knot-Cro-Sheen to tie quilts up to King size. Generally I plan the size of my quilt squares so that I can tie every 5 - 6 inches. Haven't had any problems with this.

I had the same problem with JoAnn's, but when I asked at the store, they said they were notoriously slow. Mine came after three months from when I signed up. The gals did let me use the coupons anyway, when I asked.

I haven't had very good success with tying quilts. I found that if I tried to wash the items, even by hand, the batting invariably shifted. I had used a good batting that was not supposed to need close quilting.

Prissnboot 11-11-2010 09:42 AM

I've only tied one quilt. The backing was fleece, so I just whip-stitched where the sashing on the front crossed. Then I sewed 1/4" satin ribbons on and tied them, sewed them so they would stay tied, and fraychecked the ends. OK, a little too much?

I also saw a pic of someone who sewed buttons every 6" - used plain sheets or fabric or whatever, with a high loft batting, and the buttons were buttons her grandkids have played with for years. Pretty neat, I thought!

I want to thank everyone for the response to my quilt tying question. I have tied many quilts, but baby or lap size, nothing over 60 x 72, so was not sure since this is bigger. This is a picture quilt with fleece backing so can't do all square middles, but can do some. My plan was to do at each corner and in the middle of the blank squares with pearle cotton. Have never used pearle cotton always used yarn or embroidery floss, but don't especially like the look of yarn after it is washed and didn't think floss was strong enough even using 6 strands. Also thanks to all who responded to the JoAnn question. Guess I'll try not to be so anxious.

EagarBeez 11-11-2010 10:45 AM

I am currently working on an ex large queen quilt. All the quilts I have made, have been tied, Can't afford a quilting machine.
I use crochet cotton, can get many different colors, to match/or accent your quilt

I use a surgeon knot.
I cut the threads, shorter on a baby quilt and longer on any other.
Does not matter the size of the quilt. I guess you might say, how much time do you wish to spend tying. I don't mind, a little here, a little there and it get's tied

grannypat7925 11-11-2010 12:27 PM

I use full strand of emb. floss or the twisted kind. Queen size we did for sis.....just pay attention on the batt package as to how close the ties need to be. Better too many than too few.

grannypat7925 11-11-2010 12:29 PM

Also would like to add that when I tie with emb. floss I always take an extra stitch before tying the thread.....thread down, up and then down and up again........then tie with square knot.

I too signed up for Joanns and just realized they were going to my spam folder. I have yet to recieve anything in the mail. The girl at Joanns told me to sign up again at the store without an email address.

You can go into your spam folder and retrieve the emails that are there. Move what you want to your inbox - if you click on the "plus block logo" at the end of the senders email address, it will add them to your contacts, so you will get any new emails they send in the future

I saw on one of the quilting videos to use either 3-strand embroidery floss or DMC Pearl Cotton.

luckylindy333 11-11-2010 02:39 PM

My first quilt was a king sized and I tied it with embroidery floss. DM tied a quilt with satin ribbon and tied little bows with the ends and glued them down with seam sealer. It is so cute!

ptquilts 11-11-2010 02:47 PM

I used to deal in antique quilts and the ones that were tied with yarn wound up with little fuzzballs as the yarn became matted over time. Also, large holes will damage the top.

christinetindell 11-11-2010 02:53 PM

I've only tied one quilt and that was because I used Chenille and my machine hated it!!! So I used different colored embroidery floss. It was really cute.

GrandmK 11-11-2010 03:49 PM

My mom and I always tie and always use yarn. Use baby yarn for baby quilts. double knot. My 32 year old niece asked my mom to finally but a new back on a quilt mom made when she was a baby. We always make them at least WOF X a yard and a half.
We have never had a problem or even a tie come out and the quilts are used. I got mad at my son for using a special one mom had given him. He informed me he was honoring mom by using it!! I KNOW he is right.
We have a frame like thing dad made to stretch it on. We tie at least every 6 inches as fits the pattern. We use polyester batting from Oklee Quilt company. We once threw a piece in the wash with no outside or tieing. Through sever washes it never even changed shape. It works for us

As far as flyers from Joann's go....I was told that their flyers arrive at the local post offices up to 3 mos before they are to be delivered and sometimes it takes that long for your name to be on one that arrives. Mine have finally started coming in.

wildyard 11-11-2010 04:40 PM

It took me 3 years and about 5 signups before I finally started getting the Joann's fliers and emails. Just keep after it.

cbuchanan 11-11-2010 05:23 PM

I use pearl cotton.

purplefiend 11-11-2010 06:23 PM

I used perle cotton when I tied my quilts, it doesn't unravel like yarn does. It holds up great to washing too.

Annz 11-11-2010 06:34 PM

I like embrodery floss but haven't tied a quilt in a ling time

Me too! I also use a large dollmaking needle, which let me do a whole row by clipping.

For what it's worth - I just tied a quilt for the first time (baby quilt) and was told to use cotton as anything else would be too slippery and wouldn't hold a knot.

ReeneeD 11-11-2010 07:14 PM

I had the same problem with JoAnns and it turned out that my address was wrong. The only way I got it cleared up was to go to the post office and talk to them. They were kind enough to track it down and found out that my address was not typed correctly. I am on Old Black Horse Pike and the address read Black Horse Pike. It made a lot of difference. Good Luck!

ReeneeD 11-11-2010 07:18 PM

I didn't have good luck with the only quilt I tied. I used regular yarn and it all came loose. Is there a certain knot that you should use? I just tied a square know.

Have you tried a reefknot? Also known as square knot. Does not slip. Google reefknot how to. I use it all the time with all sorts of thread, never had a problem.

carole7481 11-11-2010 08:53 PM

I spread my hand out on quilt and the distance from little finger to index finger is where I tie and I usually use meduim weight cotton crochet thread.

okiepastor 11-11-2010 09:01 PM

I use crochet thread, pearl cotton, embroidery floss, or Pretty Punch yarn.....
Have tied up to king size. but usually use blankets instead of batting for tied quilts, as you can space much further apart--plus NEVER any bunching, etc.
My favorite tip---a drop of fray check on each knot to keep them tied----drop it on when trimming them so I know it is done! Wash them and wash them, and they stay tied!

I've tied whole cloth quilts with 4-ply yarn and used square knots (pull very tight) and they haven't untied. I leave tails of about 1 - 1 1/4 in. Just this week I was looking at one of my GS's very faded quilt which is about 15 years old and used very much. Not one knot has untied. And it's been washed A LOT.

galvestonangel 11-11-2010 10:34 PM

I've used all of the above and very narrow ribbon. The last one I did, I tacked it on the sewing machine (it was minky so it doesn't show) then I put the ribbon thru and tied bows and dobbed them with ftay check. It was for one of my DGD, so that is the reason for the bows.

Annaquilts 11-11-2010 10:44 PM

I like using crocheting thread. You know the stuff that comes in a ball.

We use crochet thread and double it so you are tying with two strands. We tie every six inches.

Rose Lee 11-12-2010 07:03 AM

It depends on the look you want, I tie every 6" with embroidery floss and/ or yarn. I haven't tied in awhile but that is what I use to do.

dottientx 11-12-2010 07:21 AM

Many years ago I read a newspaper series of interviews they had done with older quilters. One lady said she ties her quilts from the get go then later at her leisure she goes back and quilts them until she has it completely quilted. But in the meantime she has the use of her quilt.
I thought this was a somewhat neat idea, however, I'd probably never get back to quilting anything. I now have a pieced top on my bed as a throw which my grandmother tied waaaay back before the 1950-60's. It's a smallish, neat block design using scraps and is somewhat of an attention getter. It seems to be tied with something like Knit-Cro-Sheen which has held up quite well. I only, on occasion have it out during the chily Fall and Winter months. My grandmother made all of her dresses using small prints and I'm sure a lot of her own scraps are in this 'comforter'.

sewjean 11-12-2010 07:23 AM

When I tied my son's (adult) quilt it stayed tied but made little holes in it and slipped on thru to the inside of the quilt. Was was the problem with that?? Now I have learned to sid and straight line quilting also meander just not geat at it.....yet!
As for Joann's I get a flyer every now & then and signed up 3 times at the store! I do get emails of advertisments & sales. maybe that saves on their mailing!

Happy sewing

I use ceochet cotton and have about 30 colors on hand as the town quilters use my place to tie their quilts - I f you use yarn, embroidery thread, or thin ribbon, it will come untied over time. I make a sugeons knot then one more tie on top of it and have never had one come undone. I have a few very old hand tied ones from the family that are and were heavily used - and still all in good form. I use a soft, fluffy wool batting from my sheep but wool, cotton and poly work well. I prefer this to machine quilting and the tied ones are warm, cuddly and soft rather than somewhat stiff. Good luck! pm if you need anything specific - could send photo of the frames etc.

mpeters1200 11-13-2010 07:06 AM

All of my charity quilts are tied. Some from a club here, all baby size, others with my club in OK which were all bed size. I have 2 king size quilts upstairs tied. Some yarn, some floss, some crochet thread.

All of the quilts we have have stood the test of time. I don't think yarn is a good idea. When I have to replace ties, it's usually the yarn ones. I only tie with floss or crochet thread. They both have their pros and cons. I find it's easier to make the knots with crochet thread than floss, but the floss comes in a TON of colors and you can make it match. I use my fist to measure ties and make sure I go just over the minimum quilting requirements for the batting.

evevanna 11-13-2010 08:07 AM

I have used all I prefer the crochet thread the knots stay looking much nicer. On the fleece backed I've made into baby quilts I have used narrow ribbon to tie them they turn out real nice. I have tied supper King size quilts with no trouble, Good Luck

Stitch Lover 11-13-2010 09:09 AM

I have used narrow ribbon to tie baby quilts but on others I have used yarn or crochet thread. Always thought embroidery thread would be hard to work with and felt it would not launder well. One of my favorite memories is helping my mother tie quilts when I was in elementary school.

catrancher 11-13-2010 09:32 AM

I have always used crochet thread.

rahaube 11-13-2010 10:02 PM

I don't think any size quilt is too bug to tie. I use crochet cotton to tie my quilts with. It is strong but goes through the layers better than many other options.
