I have only tied one quilt, and I used embroidery floss (all six strands), and tied with the surgeons knot. I think Eleanor Burns demonstrates the knot somewhere, possibly online or in one of her books. If you use colored embroidery floss, be sure to pre wash as some colors bleed a little.

Thanks for the ideas and help. I think I'll start this quilt this weekend at an all day quilting event at a local church. My first hurdle will be NOT obsessing over the fact that in a scrappy quilt, some fabrics won't "go" with their neighbors!
