I am new at this. I would like to know how to tie a quilt and not leave the little tails that you usually see on knotted quilts. Does anyone know how to do this?

I would think the only thing you can do is cut the yarn / thread really close to the knot. There would still be some tail, but not a lot. Also.. you could use buttons. I have a friend who "tied" a quilt with buttons and it turned out really cute!

Your could use a needle to pull the yarn back thru the fabric (next to the knot) and bury it in the batting. If the yarn is too difficult to pull thru the fabric, you could possibly use several thicknesses of heavy cotton thread to tie it since you don't want the tails to show anyway. I'd love to know how you decide to do it.

The method Minda mentioned is the one I was told to use, haven't tried it yet though.

I have used the method where you go through the batting. You come up to the top with your needle and then down to the back and come up again through the batting. If you do this you have to have your thread really long as you need to go from one end of the quilt to the other. It's very hard to start in the middle, so make sure your thread is long enough. I also like to use perle cotton to make the "stitches". I think it looks a lot more polished than yarn and it isn't "fuzzy".

I have been told, To use the Method that Minda described, however I was told to use embroidery floss. I used 3-strands.

Interesting, I've always used cro-sheen bedspread weight. I never minded the tails cause that's the old-timers way of tying. But the buttons and hiding the thread is interesting. I may try those this year.

My grandmother is the one I copied. In and out twice and tied in the front. I clip the ends about 1/2 inch and then on to the next. I start in the middle and if I have a big wrinkle, I just clip a few knots and work it in.

That's what I learned from my Granny and Mom, too. Do you use the bedspread thread, too?

I've always started at the top though, think I'll try your middle beginning next time. I usually pin it quite tight, but there seems to be a wrinkle I have to work out...

In the group I am in that do quilts for cancer patients, we use floss and leave the ends short. It really looks nice on youth quilts.
