The Ugg Valentine Quilt

This started out as a Valentine gift then it turned out to be not fun at all! I'm still working on it. Has anyone else made this pattern? Quilting Valentine's Hearts Using Charm Packs. https://youtu.be/nkvQ0egLjrk |
Bummer- Jenny's tutorials are usually easy. What problems are you having?
I've done many of hers but not this one. |
Her instructions are easy. I'm just not liking the quilt at all.
|
That's happened to me too. Just a few months ago I was working on a quilt and the more I sewed the more I didn't like it. UGH is right!!! :)
I think yours looks pretty though. But I know how you feel. |
Mine is in UFO land :D
|
I've decided to put it in the maybe some other time cupboard. So much $ wasted! Ugg
|
Good idea. Move on to something that makes you happy :) That's what this craft is all about.
Or------------ maybe rework the blocks into something else? That way you wouldn't feel that the money is wasted. Just a thought. |
I have a few quilts that are UFO's and some that down right abandoned. My life is too short to work on something that is not fun.

Now I'm off to Michaels to buy Crayola Ultra Washable markers to experiment marking quilt designs on white fabric and I realized I can make heart bookmarks out of the hearts I've cut and pieced. Lol Someone will be getting some expensive heart bookmarks.

There you go!!!! :)

Hey, mix up the parts. That would make it way more fun to make, and exciting to look at. Add a couple of reds and darkest pinks to lightest pinks. Make the viewer want Look.
try laying it out without sashing and in blocks of four with the points touching. Or in opposing rows. Hearts don't always mean smooth sailing love, they can mean love sometimes hurts Or put sashing between the pieces of a heart, and not on the outside. I can't wait to see it! |

I decided I like the "mix up the parts, make it exciting to look at" ideal, and I'll go with a fun Candy Stripe backing and outside border. I was making it as a throw on the floor tea party fun quilt anyway. Thanks |
I would advise using a darker fabric for sashing. What you chose does not have enough contrast. I think this will help. It will be a cute quilt.
|
These might work in a row by row quilt. Or perhaps a medallion style little girls quilt. But, I would increase the size of the top white corner squares to overlap enough so the points aren't sewn off (lost) when you join them to your sashing or finish off the block.
|
I think your blocks are very nice but I do understand that if you are unhappy with the results then it isn't any fun to make. Maybe if you just put it away for a short time and then when you bring it out again you will enjoy it more. Sorry you don't like your hearts. Just make something that you enjoy sewing on-that is what makes our quilting hobby fun.
|
see, I think those few blocks could make a great table runner or baby quilt or even placemats.....
i do agree with using a contrasting sashing.....no matter what you choose... But if you hate it, don't make any more blocks! |
As I’m reading this thread, it occurred to me..... projects that a person “puts away” because they don’t like might be loved by another quilter. What about a thread that puts the “misfits” up for a reduced price or trade? All money isn’t lost and you might end up with a “misfit” that you love! I would start it, but have nothing to offer.

I would sash it in the white/cream to make the hearts float.
Or if you were really wanting to make the quilt fun, set your blocks wonky on a cream background then sash with a darker pink/red. |
Need Contrast Fabric

Sorry to d r a g this post out but I might feel a flicker of hope. Need suggestions for contrast fabric. All help appreciated!

All of you fabrics are blenders, I would go with a bold print. Look for something you like, a floral or geometric, something that will make a statement. Maybe chocolate Valentine’s Day candies???

Yes, a bold print! And look for a color that will truly separate your blocks. Violet, teal, tangerine, yellow, or maybe even a "flower garden" with several colors. Try colors that don't seem like they would work and you could be surprised.
|
I like the idea of chocolate brown. I personally love to pair bright lime green with pink. Pick a really fun print. If it were mine, I might use the black and white teapot print I have. You said it's a tea party quilt, right?
|
Not sure how many blocks you have made but perhaps making the heart patchwork instead of all the components the same fabric would shake this up a bit. When I work with pink, I typically will use green or brown as contrasting fabric.
|
Yes, bold!! I love what you're doing.
|
I like your quilt. Sometimes as we view our projects in the midst of making them, we find out we don't like them or tire of seeing the fabric. However, I have found if you take a break from working on it and come back to it, you see it with fresh eyes. Also, when you add the quilting designs and thread color choices and see the texture added, it takes on a whole new look. Just my 2 cents.
|
I would go around the hearts with lace to make the top of the heart look rounded. Make it for a little girl. Little girls love lace.
|
You know a dark red might be nice. Try laying it out on different colors and see if one of them lead you to the perfect one for you.

Here is an idea. Use those blocks as a center panel, then add other patterns around it. The blocks around the center panel don't all have to be the same, just complementary colors.
|
And I thought I’d be reading something about Ugg boots and Valentines. Just shows how goofy a mind can get. Keep working at it. You’ve had some good suggestions. Love pink with lime green and also with yellow, but it has to be the right shade of yellow.
|
It looks great to me, why don't you like it? It's the perfect valentine quilt!
