So... I think we Americans have so much that we don't recognize when enough is enough. (When will I have enough fabric, for example? Today was the last day for the 25% discount. I had to sit on my hands to NOT to order fabric that I didn't need so that I wouldn't feed my addition. But I DID IT!) When I feel the adrenaline rush that comes from the potential of making an unnecessary purchase, I feel most successful when I take the money I'm ABOUT to spend needlessly/waste and give it to people who really need it. Otherwise, I just have more STUFF to get rid of later. Some days I do better than others ;)

I have a Viking I bought 35 years ago, still running hard and well. I do look at some of the others I think because they are new and clean (smile) Paid $400.00 back then recond it will last me the rest of my life. I need to stop drooling....

I am the same way...I saw the brother project runway at walmart and really wanted it...They are supposed to be really good machines....I love machines too!

crankygran 11-27-2010 07:54 PM

Don't forget to take your machines out about every six to eight months and run them for a minute or so to prevent them from freezing up. The old oil can gel and seize up.

You are, after all, asking an entire community of quilters, sewers and embroiders if you have a "disease" where a new machine is concerned!!!!! I have an old 1230 Bernina, a Viking #1+, Designer II, Designer 1 and an SE/LE. I have already sold my old Viking #1 and am getting ready to sell/donate my #1+ and Designer II machines. I just can't give up my 1230 Bernina (love that machine), or the Designer I or the SE. I am trying to be "normal" about this but the lady who is looking at the #1+ and Designer II already has two other machines. If this is a disease I have it and apparently it is catching. Never does a day go by that I don't look somewhere on the Internet for different kinds of machines. I'm not greedy, I just love to see what is out in the market. As for having machines that aren't being used to their full potential, you don't have to use machines in that way, we love them, we feel comforted, we feel useful and yes we even feel creative. If you have the financial means to purchase a new machine don't feel guilty just enjoy the chase looking for your new baby. Good Luck

I need a 12 step program for buying machines.....I know the heart flutter, increased pulse rate, etc. GO FOR IT lol

Dee 11-27-2010 09:05 PM

I love this. I started out with a Kenmore for 26 years. When it died, I now have 8. I really didn't need the last ones, but they called to me and I couldn't let them be lonely. :D

penski 11-27-2010 09:57 PM

Yes i have seen it on here a lot of times , so you are not alone

Kas 11-27-2010 10:20 PM

My husband was reading the first two posts over my shoulder. His comment? "My wife is addicted to both!" LOL

yes!

stancilgirls 11-28-2010 05:14 AM

I want a featherweight really, really bad. Do I need it? No not really. But I remember my mother sewing on one when I was a child. Plus, I'm a very simple sewer. Can't seem to get into all the fancy stuff. I like to piece on a very simple machine. My mom has an Elna Quilter and I do some FMQ on it, but I never use the fancy stuff. Trying to save my change to buy a featherweight.

Gee I have it, just didn't know there was a name for it! YOu hit it on the head for me! I have been the last two weeks looking at FW and 301's on ebay & craigslist! I already have two janomes that I enjoy! I have a Singer 99 and a 15 that are tanks. I haven't even looked at the 99 since I brought it home hardly and yet I have my dh convinced I could use another!!!! Did I mention I have two sergers also? I sold my treadle years ago when we moved, now I think I need to buy another! Like you, I have very little time for this addiction, and yet I still have SMAD!

Tinabodina 11-28-2010 05:44 AM

I have a total of 10 machines. I went through the same thing. I am a collector.

nhweaver 11-28-2010 12:09 PM

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

I love your rationale :D

Hmm - not so much machine lust, but the desire to buy another machine exactly like the one I currently have and really like. I have this thought that I better have a spare stowed away because someday my current machine will give out and I won't be able to find another that I like as much. Kind of like buying several of the same shirt or pants because they'll never make anything like those again in my lifetime! Argh - why do I have anxiety attacks over stuff like this??!!

You are not alone. I keep thinking I need another brother like I have, because if this one wears out, I would have an anxiety attack.

I have three machines, each a justified purchase:
1. Husqvarna Viking 500 computerized sewing machine, my first "fancy" sewing machine, bought a couple of years after I got married. I needed it to decorate our new home, plus at that time I was still sewing clothes and had just discovered quilting.
2. Husqvarna Viking Mega Quilter for my new machine quilting frame. Do I need to say more?
3. Bernina Artista 730E, my dream machine! Love to machine embroider, and I can sew on #1 while #3 is embroidering!

Before I got the Bernina I did have an inexpensive embroidery machine, but I passed it on to a friend that really wanted it.

I have 4 sewing machines and a serger. Went to a church rummage sale and bought a vintage White machine, with all the attachments in the original tin (most of them still wrapped in cellophane), the manual still had the warrantee cards in it and I KNOW that machine had maybe been used once. It cost me a whole $3.00!!! I gave it to a friend who wanted to learn to quilt but couldn't afford to buy a machine. I really wanted to keep it, but, I figured I could pay it forward a little and I could use the good Karma.

weatheread 11-29-2010 12:35 PM

I have that disorder too I have a room full of machines and just put a Janome 1200D surger on lay away it will only be my 5th serger so I have 9 machines in my sewing room now 10 will make a even number

irishrose 11-29-2010 08:02 PM

SM hoarders, there is a good looking Singer Rocket or Rocketeer on ebay right now. $189 bid or $229 buy it now. I think that is a really good price.

MarilynLouise 11-30-2010 05:20 AM

I have too many machines, too. The problem is that when you have them it is hard to get rid of them. They each seem to have their purpose, but they all take up space and have to be maintained!!

cherylmae 12-01-2010 09:58 AM

Oh, I have the same problem and shame on me, because I haven't even learned what I need on my sigerxl 1000. Use my old pfaff for everything. But it is still fun to look.

cheryl rearick 12-01-2010 10:57 AM

I'm curios, has or does anyone use a surger for quilting? When I sew demin I use a 3 step zig zag on my viking, Surger just sounds easy?

I use my serger seldom, because I cant seem to coordinate how to sew a flat lock seam, or a curve,, so for me it only works when I need a neat seam finish that has to be trimmed, although it is easier than zig zagging an edge, :-)

lclang 12-01-2010 08:23 PM

I have a whole pile of machines, and the last two weeks I have needed three! The Featherweight was having problems with the thread catching in the bobbin area so it went out of town to be repaired. Then my Pfaff threw a tension fit and usually I can get it corrected, but not this time, so when I go after the Featherweight I will take the Pfaff for repair. Now I am sewing on my Babylock machine and so far it is hanging together! It's okay to have several backups!

Dee 12-01-2010 09:19 PM

Maybe thats why we have so many machines. Twice I have been left without my machine. Well, I then got a backup and then another and now I'm okay, if ones gets sick or dies.
