Unquilting
I quilted the outside of a feathered wreath on a quilt top. Looked good, then I quilted the inner ring. The feathered wreath was great but I ended up with an A cup in the center. Why does it always take so much longer to take out quilting then to put it in? Note to self, always do the inner ring first!

Because the person undoing is not a machine. Good luck with the undoing I hate that job and try so hard to avoid it.
|
Instead of taking it out could you quilt a close grid in the center to make it lay flat?
|
I clip every 5th stitch from the back then the thread comes out easier on the front. We have all made mistakes when quilting.

I understand your plight. A couple of months ago I unquilted some feathered wreaths on a quilt I was doing. It took me a full week of all my sewing time. My problem was that I had used a color that was such a contrast that it destroyed the look of the quilt--to much. The farther I had quilted the worse it looked. So, I ripped. I am glad I did it. Now, I like what I am doing for the quilting color and pattern I am using. I had used white and now I am using colors. What a difference. And, of course, saving the quilt was a saving of a lot of money I had already spent for the fabric. So, I applaud you for being willing to go one step backward- now you can go forward again.

I've read somewhere that 5 minutes of machine quilting will be an hour of unquilting! I lucked out yesterday. The reason I had to unquilt was my upper tension was off so the bobbin thread was just sitting there, easy to just pull out and I noticed after only a few minutes.

Sigh. Been there ... done that. When I am unquilting, I try to focus my thoughts on how much better it will be once I am finished.... and not on how long this is taking!

Unfortunately it needs to be done sometimes. It always feels good when it's done though.

Got the wreath all picked out and quilted a different design. Was going swimmingly until.....yep quilted in a bit of the backing. Luckily I can trim it close and then pull the fabric out of the stitching thread by thread. SIGH

Feeling your pain---literally in my arms and shoulders! Spent about 9 hrs unquilting about a fourth of a quilt last night--had about gotten finished and needing to turn it for borders when I realized I had a pleat that ran almost all the way down the one side. And of course there wasn't any tension problems and part of the borders on this panel had an intricate design---so it was almost picking out each individual stitch! plan to buy a new seam ripper--think I wore that one out!

Sorry for your plight!!! I guess all of us face these little mishaps now and again. I read your answers and am always so impressed at how much you know...I think of you as one of the experts I read and learn from here on quilt board. So all of us novice to expert suffer the gremlins attacking our machines! At least this is a small mistake! Now when I mess up...wil just think....part of the process.

This sounds like your "challenge" quilt for the year! When done, it will be worth it. But you know that. Please share a photo when it's done.

Ditto what she said!

I play a game with myself when I am in your situation. I pretend that for every stitch I remove that is one evil person removed from this world. It seems to keep me motivated.

Two of the most important pieces of advice I was given when I started quilting were that you have a seam ripper not for if you need it, but for when you need it. Accept that everyone will need to take out stitches. And the other one was to REPLACE that seam ripper, not keep it the 20 years that most of us do! You will be amazed at how nicely a new ripper works!

So sorry this happened. When it is all fixed you will feel better. Fabric is pretty.
|
I use the blunt side of a needle to take out the stitches, it seems to be working better and faster than other tools

It's always something, isn't it? There's a German saying "da ist der Wurm drin" (translated: There is a worm in it) which is used when no matter what you do, something goes wrong. Looks like you got a worm in the paisley. (LOVE the fabric)

I agree with the other people. You are one of the real quilters that I always read too. You always have helpful answers. Barny

I feel your pain. Just took out quilting on a red bird Christmas quilt ( 20 hours) It only took about one hour to quilt. I'm not a big fan. Only good part was it was really cold so I used the quilt to cover up with while taking out. I have a friend that uses a face shaver ( the little ones that look somewhat like a pencil )she says only way to go.will not cut anything but thread.

Oh Tartan, I wish I was there to help you. I am such an expert on frogging! Rip it, rip it.
