Unquilting
 

This poor quilt has been waiting since about May of 2012 to get finished. I started out hand quilting in each block. The stencil was not the same size as the blocks, and I did not care for it. Fortunately I had only done two blocks. Then I thought I'd just machine quilt the whole thing with straight lines. It started to get very lumpy bumpy. So then it sat for a very long time until I got it out today. I plan to take out every stitch and re-pin. Then I will hand quilt an all over feather design I have. It will take quite some time, but it will be worth it. I like these colors, and do not want to waste the fabric.

Unsewing is not the worst thing in the world. Just be patient and pretty soon it will be apart and you can start over.

You are right, it's too pretty to just let it be. I have been there done that. Just sit in front of a good movie with a good seam ripper and have at it. I use a sheet from one of those tape lint rollers to place all the little threads. I works like fly paper and traps them so they don't end up all over the chair and floor.

PS Your handquilting was nicely done.

You could also leave it and do another line (or 2) of echo quilting around the pattern. Very pretty!

This would be my choice also. The quilting that is done is lovely. It wouldn't be too hard to echo that for a row or two.

A pretty quilt and quilting. But if you feel like you need to unquilt, it's not too bad. I've done it. Not actually fun, but not as bad as I thought it would be. It would be nice to save the good parts though.

Joining the others with compliments on the colors and your quilting! Lovely. May I ask how you marked your quilting design, please? That is on dark colors so what shows up for you when you are stitching? I sometimes wonder about hand quilting from the back--if the back is a light color.

Been there and had to do unquilting. I made a Hidden Wells quilt for my GGD. I did QAYG method and also was using the Glo in The Dark thread from Superior Threads. On the very first block that I finished quilting, for whatever reason, I decided to press it. Well the thread melted in many places and I had to remove it all. I did the FMQ and so stitches went from tiny to large. I did get it done. It is a slow process but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

That is beautiful fabric. The quilting looks good to me.

Can you leave the part that is quilted alone and take out the pins and re-sandwich it??? It will be a little cumbersome to handle, but you will not have to remove the original quilting and can go from there.

Think of it as an enlightened fresh start.

Always happy to share information. I have a plastic stencil, and marked with white chalk. I have heard that other colors of chalk can be difficult to wash out. If I have light colors of fabric, I use regular pencil and try to stitch directly on top of it.
