Update on flying geese fiasco
 

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions yesterday. I forgot that I had purchased the Quilt in a Day flying geese rulers - DUH. So instead of making the little ones that I posted yesterday, I decided just to practice on a bigger one, using my rulers. Success. Even though it is not perfect, it's so much easier to start with something bigger and then try and go smaller. I am a perfectionist, therefore, I drive myself crazy with my points. I still have some trouble at the beginning and ending of my 1/4 seams. They tend to want to be bigger at those places.

the trick to even 1/4" seams to not to watch the needle, which people tend to do... watch the fabric and your seam guide (whatever kind you use) begin with the fabric right UP to the seam guide (guides are better FOR SOME PEOPLE, than the 1/4" foot, but both are fine, and USING both is fine)... now watch the fabric go into the foot, under the foot and then at the end, it's like golf or baseball... FOLLOW THRU....do NOT let go of the fabric till it is ALL the way thru the foot... feeling like it is done when you get to the front of the foot is the problem....follow thru...all the way past the needle while still controlling the fabric....i know this sounds obvious but it is a really common problem and especially when sewing on an angled piece... we sew straight squares better because it is straight...the seam has to be measured from the needle to the seam, not matter the angle... do not watch the needle...

it looks darling...the imperfection YOU are seeing, (we think are all fine) is caused by sewing the geese to the outside fabric with it on top. Sew with the back of your geese on top so you can see where the points are...and don't think they are right on the point....you need to allow 2 threads beyond the 'point' of the point so that when you open the seam there's enough room to show the point and then lay flat....if you sew ON the point as you cross them, it will be buried as you open it up. I sew from point to point to point.... always trying to keep it straight but caring most about that 2 threads....

Starching the fabric before cutting helps keep points from getting away from you.
