So yesterday on my way home from a doctor appt. I decided to stop in a "new-for-me" quilt shop I had been in once before to get a piece of fabric I couldn't find anywhere else. While browsing her notions wall I spied "ROXANNE" Glue-Baste-It. Of course it was pricey, but had 2 needle tips with it and little plastic things to clean the needle tips. So I bought some and just tried it out. How awesome! No ironing it down after application. It did a wonderful job. Now when I run out of it I can use the Elmers. I'm sure the bottle will last forever because you use so little.

if you don't iron it, does it stick imediately? it is washable, right? I got 3 tips and 2 empty bottles for $4 at Hobby Lobby. I use more glue than a kindergarten class!

BellaBoo 10-16-2010 07:18 AM

Roxanne's basting glue is a great product. It holds fabric together almost instantly. Elmer's takes a touch with the iron. I think Elmer's has more water in it. I have lots of Elmer's school glue so I was thinking I could put some in a bowl and microwave it to get some of the water to evaporate. Won't hurt to try if I run out of Roxanne's. I have to order the Roxanne's Basting Glue. I keep Roxanne's next to my sewing machine and Elmer's on my ironing board.

It sticks immediately and it comes out in tiny drops as you move the applicator. I used it on a QFK and it was beyond fantastic. I think it is well worth the money I spent; I'm a believer. I must have done that binding in half the time it usually takes me.

RkayD 10-16-2010 07:43 AM

I have used glue on several of the quilts I've completed. I always heat set it and it comes out in the wash. Not had a problem with it yet!. Makes me look more skilled than I feel I am. =) I bought some tiny tiny steel tips at Wal Mart or Hobby Lobby can't remember which..in the acrylic paint dept.

I love Roxanne's. Glad they have something to clean the tube now, though. Make sure that you do it. The tube can get badly clogged.

merrylouw 10-16-2010 07:51 AM

Thanks for this tip! Sounds great for matching seams, etc.

BellaBoo 10-16-2010 07:53 AM

I saved the printer ink refill squeeze bottles. They were easy to clean the ink out. They have the long very thin metal tips that are perfect for glue basting. Only a tiny drop of glues comes out at a time. I fill with Elmer's School Glue. Also I found a big bottle of Aleene's Fabric Basting Glue on clearance at Hobby Lobby and it works great too.

I do too... I buy several bottles at a time LOL
I found that the 2 bottles for $1 from the Dollar Tree work just as well as Elmers does :D:D:D

Ok how do I find out about this glue basting for borders??? Never heard of it.. help me..

EasyPeezy 10-16-2010 09:34 AM

Elmer's glue must be the next best thing to sliced bread. :D
I did the whole binding for a large quilt with Elmer's.

I sewed my binding to the front, pinned (making sure there is enough
binding to grab), glued, ironed, removed pins and SID in the front. Perfect.
Won't be doing binding any other way.

nativetexan 10-16-2010 10:35 AM

i tried it but didn't have the thin applicator. i got too much on the fabric and when pressed, it came though the fabric!

Kitsie 10-16-2010 11:22 AM

Me, too! Ain't it great? And you can try a decorative stitch for the SID.

gale 10-16-2010 11:35 AM

Every time I'm at a shop I think about getting the Roxanne's so I can reuse the bottle but I never do. I always want to spend that $8 or so on something else. Where do I get printer ink refill bottles? I've never refilled printer inks.

Walmart, where else?

:D :D :D

gale 10-16-2010 11:52 AM

Of course! I'll check next time we're there. Are they already full of ink or can you buy empties?

stewyscrewy 10-16-2010 11:53 AM

I need to get me a bottle wiht the needle tips I have a great idea for project

SuziC 10-16-2010 01:16 PM

Don't you have to wait a long time for the Elmers to dry before sewing thru it?

BellaBoo 10-16-2010 01:27 PM

That's why I use Elmer's at the ironing board. Heat sets it in seconds. Roxanne's is thicker and sets without heat, not as strong a bond as the Elmer's heated.

Lois-nounoe 10-16-2010 06:43 PM

I have never tried glueing anything on quilts! Bet it works well with aplique! I have a walking foot that I use on my bindings and I don't even pin it down and have had great, neat bindings with it. I have a new aplique pattern that I was going to use Heat and Bond on but I might try that "Elmer's in bottle" trick! I have a couple of ink refill bottles that I saved cause as a crafter of everything thing I save EVERYTHING!!LOL

Hi Fidgety,

Sharon Schamber has a tutorial: http://www.sharonschamber.com/free%2...ng%20Class.pdf

Another question on this thread - how soon can you sew after applying the glue? After it's heat set, you're good to go!

Cheers,
Linda

Well, with the Roxanne's I sewed it immediately. Not a pin in sight, and with the walking foot I just "flew" around it. Today, if I ever get off here, I am going to time the binding of a QFK.

judykay 10-17-2010 10:05 AM

Where at hobby lobby did you find the tips and bottles? I have not had any luck in finding them.

Funny thing..... I have a lady friend who used to sew and teach alot of classes. She always hands me stuf that she is not using anymore due to the fact she is now involved in making glass and jewelry. Anyway. I went thru some of my stash things today and what did I find but this Roxeann glue stuff you all were talking about!!! lol Matter of fact she gave me several bottles of it.. Now I guess I know what it is for!

Judy, I found my bottles and tips in the paint and glue section, I think it was near the oil paints.

judykay 10-27-2010 08:37 AM

Thank you, I will have to check my Hobby Lobby.

If you have access to medical supplies you can use a large syringe with a large needle. In my lab we had blunt needles and it works great. I know now a days is very hard to have access to those.

Tink's Mom 10-27-2010 09:25 AM

I've been using Elmers school glue stick...I think it is pretty good. For little spots I use a pencil with a broken tip/or a really dull pencil.

Ditter43 10-27-2010 09:35 AM

Thanks for all the great ideas! I have never used glue but this old dog will learn a new trick! Thanks for the good info!! :D :D

BellaBoo 10-27-2010 09:45 AM

I've used regular Elmer's Glue to put tiny pieces of fabric over cut off points of a quilt block to make them pointed. I made sure the machine quilting was over the tiny piece and it's almost impossible to see it. It's been used and washed many times and my little secret is still a secret.
