As a former pedi/neonatal ICU & ER nurse, I'm sure it's an urban legend myself. But it could be that there was an infant who died of SIDS who had a rag quilt in the bed coincidentally, and the "myth" was perpetuated. That is why the rule is now "Back to sleep" meaning new babies shouldn't be put to sleep on their tummies. There has been a proven 70% decrease in SIDS since these guidelines were adopted. I made a rag quilt for a surgeon friend who had a new baby. Don't worry about it.
