I like using black as it can make other colors pop. I used it in my Mosaic Quilt I think using black depends on the overall quilt pattern and design, for a quilt made for any age. If it works, it works.

I frequently use a checkerboard pattern for these quilts, as it is very easy and quick to do. So it would be a juvenile print for one block and then a black block next to it. So it ends up 50% black. I understand on using black for accent colors or for sashing, but I hesitate to use it in the checkerboard pattern.

I use black a lot. Not as my main color but as framing fill-in or just part of the overall pattern. I think it really makes everything else pop. I do donation quilts for a group dedicated to helping children through social services. I've even wonder-under machine stitched a black bear on one with a woodsy theme. Really shouts See Me!! Trying to do quilts for older boys as they are always short of them.

I've been using black a lot lately. Like toverly said, it can be hard to use black thread on black fabric. But I wouldn't hesitate to use it in a donation quilt.
