Use for donated strip sets
 

I received a baggie of strip sets -- each piece has a 4 inch, then a 2 inch, and then a 7 inch piece, 2.5 inches wide and 13.5 length. They are all in beautiful blue fabrics and separated by contrast, although not consistently, i.e., not light dark light, or light light dark, etc.

I can't even imagine what the plan was for these. I can't think of a block that they would make. I'm considering trying a jelly roll race with them, but hope some of you might have other suggestions. Thanks!

How about place mats or table runners or pot holders? Pot Holders would be good for gifts.

Try laying them out as a band of bargello, you can sew them into circles and cut through the largest piece in intervals.

Or, when in doubt, it sounds like sashing for a scrap quilt made of similar or contrasting fabrics.

3 words: scrappy Irish chain.

I would even consider string blocks out of them.

Sounds like they could make a log cabin block???

maybe a spider web block? Cut in a triangle
from the strip sets?

A photo would help, I find your description of measurements confusing.
Would there be enough to make a quilt - if more fabric were added?

Maybe separate your lights and darks and make either a rail fence or log cabin or maybe the way you describe it possibly an Irish Chain was being started.

If you center one on top of the other can you cut a 60 deg triangle? Set 4 together for your square

This sounds like a winner. I was thinking along those lines before I found this post.

Beautiful fabric. If it was me I would just sew all those strips together
alternating the placement of the squares. And if you don't have enough
for a quilt, make a table runner. Either way it will be lovely. Can't wait
to see the finished product.

They could have been for a log cabin.

I think I would just put them together like a jelly roll race or maybe flip them end to end and sew them together in pairs the long way first and then stack them, that would give sort of a wavy bargello effect.

Also could be used to sash squares with a little thought to layout.

Lovely fabrics. I agree with the jelly roll race for a simple plan.
Or a bit more complex sew into squares with alternate rows flipped. Then maybe place one square in different direction on another with RSF, draw a line diagonally, sew both sides of the line as with HSTs and cut on the line. I think Jenny Doan does a quilt like this with just strips.

Those are gorgeous! You can have so much fun. Sew them into squares in a way that pleases you and then cut them up! Cut them in 1/4's either on the straight (+) or on the diagonal (x) then mix up and re-sew the pieces, kind of as you do in a disappearing 9 patch method.

I think you may have measured them wrong. From the look of it on your picture, they look like they are (finished) 5, 2, and 8" segments, for an overall lenth of 15" (fin.)

If you cut an inch off the long end of the sets, you can sew 7 of them together, alternating long ends so you get a 14" square. Sew those into a quilt.
