Used MC 6500P vs. new DC 1050
 

I wrote a post a half hour ago that must have vanished. Let me do this again.

In the market to upgrade from a good ole Kenmore to a computerized one. I am sold on Janome. My options are buying a usedMC 6500P vs new DC 1050 for 300-375 (depending if i shop Mrvacnmrssew or my local dealer) .

The used one? Craigslist ...asking $600 ... 8 yrs old, recently serviced by the same dealer I use. Seller is Janome loyal , considering she has a pricier embroidery one also for sale. Has 13 feet. Seller is a quilter and her pics showquilts on the walls behind machines. )

my hesitation comes from the dealer said a few weeks ago when i asked about buying a used computerized. He said he would not because you dont knowwhat youre getting, unlike a mechanical that sraightforward. However, as i mentioned, both the seller and I use the same guy and he told her two weeks ago when he cleaned this 6500 of hers that it needed no repairs.

What would you do? New mc 6500 retail for 1499.

I bought a used 6600MC from my dealer 3-4 years ago and I haven't regretted it for a second.

As a comparison ... I had paid $700 for my 6600 but that included a 60 day warranty from the dealer, and the dealer had serviced it before I purchased it from them. I also got the extension table, the full compliment of accessories it was originally sold with (perhaps 8 feet?), plus a 1/4" accufeed foot, an FMQ foot, knee bar, and soft vinyl cover.

I had recently looked at the specs of the DC1050 when someone mentioned that Joanne's is now selling this Janome model. While I havent' seen/touched the machine, I can only *speculate* that given it's price ($299) and it's weight (12 lbs), it is more than likely constructed of more plastic than metal, so may not be of the same quality components as the 6500MC.

I would go with the used machine. Computerized parts last a long time. I really don't think they are subject to any more stress than metal moving parts. If they've lasted 8 years, there's no reason to think they won't last for another 20 years. Plus the dealer has a vested interest. I wonder if he would give you the same warning if he had a used MC6500P in your price range to sell you? My 2 cents......

One never knows when computers might go out. It is a chance with that older one.

I bought a used MC 6600P for $350 from a local sewing center several months ago.He'd gone over it & said it was fine. I am thrilled with it.

I do think the 6500P may be overpriced at $600. I checked "completed listings" on eBay and there are quite a few used ones that did not sell for $650. One new one sold for $870. Here is a link to the completed listings (green means it sold; red means it did not sell):
