Hi, I am sure someone can answer this for me.
I want to make some placemats, but use 2 different colors in the binding.... one color for each side. Can anyone tell me what size to cut the strips to sew together? Also, do you use the 1/4" seam or a little bigger? I am not looking to do a real wide binding, just enough to finish them off nicely. Spring starts tomorrow and I have to get these done. My husband pointed at the snowmen placemats currently on our table and said "time to think spring, dear" - :) |
3/4 an in. ea. should do it.

If you want your binding to be 2", cut two strips at 1 1/4"
each, sew together, press in half and sew on as normal. sound right??? Hope so. |
I will follow this thread, thanks looks interesting for 2 colors for binding

Does anyone have any pics of 2 colors for binding?

For regular 1/4" binding (where you would normally cut 2" wide strips), you cut the front side binding 3/4" and the back binding 1 3/4". Sew them together, fold in half and then sew to the front as you normally would. You might want to make the strips a smidgen wider. The best thing to do is just to take 2 strips with those measurements and sew a sample so you can see how it folds, and which side of the binding is displayed on which side of the quilt. This method is from Judy Turner's "Awash with Color" book from a gazillions years ago. And I"m doing it from memory because the book is another state right now. ;) |
