I have a Janome 6600 and use every stitch on it for my crazypatch quilts.Idont think I have ever used the foot for buttonholes yet.

Haven't used the button hole maker on mine....doubt I ever will.

I must be a rare bird, I use my embrodiery/sewing machine I think 80% of the time. I use most of my decorative stitches a lot. I quilt with it also. I love all the diffrent things it can do!

The dealer said my Sapphire 855 does not need a walking foot as it has the automatic pressure foot. ???

I think I change feet way more often than stitch type

I am new to quilting and will be using a machine to piece my tops. As I look through quilting books I have noticed that many of the patterns require an applique. Before I purchase a new machine, what machine stitch is used to do an applique? Can a stright stitch be used or do I need to use a stitch that looks more like a blanket stitch?

Many people use a satin stitch for applique or a very small zig-zag stitch.

my singer uses a straight and a zig zag ~ so i use 100% of the machine! :lol:

but, that is why as much as i would love a new machine - i don't want or need all the bells and whistles. The only stitch i would like to have that my singer doesn't have is a blanket stitch - i would use it occasionally when i applique

I had to read this thread seeing that all I own are vintage machines and only use treadle machines exclusively. For me I use all of my functions (straight stitch) all of the time but if I wanted to do any decorative stitches I have attachments for that. I do have a Singer 500A that has all sorts of stitches and you can shovel cams off in her for the really fancy stuff like embroidery but I never use it so that is why I am selling it right now in the classifieds.

I think it is just a marketing ploy to get you to buy the machine because you can do all of this neat stuff with the machine. But you have to admit they have some really pretty stitches on the new machines!

But for me the zig zag feature is for putting buttons on my shorts when they pop off! And that is the only reason I am keeping my Purple Kenmore! :lol: :lol:
