What do you people use your 6 and a half inch squares for please? The usual florals, plains and novelty fabrics....just trying to get some ideas...

Joy,

I design raggedy purses and I have used 6 1/2" squares to make purses, I've also used 6 1/2" squares to make raggedy quilts.

I cut them in half to make rectangles, then used those in I Spy quilts.

Let's see if I can post a pic:

I saw a darling baby quilt in the window of a quilt shop using 6 1/2 squares. I liked it so much tha I am working on one now. I used a 6 1/2 in square of a solid and used 1 1/2 in sashing 6 1/2 in long. I have a 1 1/2 in square of another print in the corners. The 6 1/2 in square has stitching in the middle of it using a double thread in the needle. I chose juvenile type things like a duck, dog, cat, train, etc. I will post picture soon. But if you had a random selction of 6 1/2 in squares, you could pull them all together by using a coordinating sashing, and any size you made would look really pretty.

I got inspired with the Drunkard's Path BOM and chopped some of my charm squares today. I'm going to mix them with "plain" fabric to make a scrappy Drunkard's Path quilt.

I click for a larger view but my equipment won't do it... would have liked to see your quilt up closer... the quilt with the name "Leith" on it....

joy 10-07-2007 06:41 PM

for Refibered... do you mind telling me the size of your rectangles... also you have the same colour in between the two rectangles the same as what is in the border.... what size is that strip please? I rather like that idea but need a closer look.....

hi Joy,

The rectangles on that quilt finish at 2x5 -- guess I started with 5.5inch squares.

The sashing is all the same color as the border, cut at 1.5, finished at 1 inch (so the rectangles and sash make a 5 inch finished square).

If you start with 6.5 inch squares, you'd just cut them one way down the middle for 3.25x6.5 inch rectangles, add 1.5 inch sashing and you'd finish with a 6 inch block. I think. :? Its early and my mind is not awake yet.

You can go to the webshots page and see the quilt: http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2422823360099806533iGJcJK

I freehand quilted swirls in each block. It was a lot of fun to make, and Leith really likes it.
