Using adding machine paper rolls?
 

I,m going to try this method of making a scrappy quilt.
My question is, do you tear the paper off as you go,
or do you wait until it is sewn together.
I have never used paper before.

for me its easier to leave the paper on until sewed it on my quilt to keep it more stable

or

remove the paper and starch it very heavily before sewing into blocks or as borders. ...

I have never used the adding machine paper but I have done several paper piecing using good ole CHEAP copier paper. I have done it both ways: removed the paper after finishing the block but before sewing to others. Starch in large quantities will be your friend doing it this way! I have waited until the top was pieced together and then removed the paper, then starched the top before sandwiching and quilting.

A great, great, great tip for when you want to remove the paper is to wet the seams with water to moisten the paper and it will come off a lot easier and won't cause you to distort your blocks

If a large quilt gets too heavy or too difficult to handle you can remove some paper after you get the next row on.
Say you are joining rows of blocks. After you add the third row you can begin to take some paper off the first.

The paper I use is - I go to the newspaper office and ask for end rolls. They are really cheap. I like the idea of the 3" adding machine paper, but it is expensive. Also, the newspaper paper can be cut to 3" strips. Just saying.

I'm just trying to figure out how to use the 3" strips. Is this to make HST's?

I dont know where I got my machine rolls- probably thrift store. but I think they are $3 for like a 6 or 8 pack of rolls that will last a LOOOOOOOOONG time..

you sew your little pieces , but big enough to cover the machine tape, you keep sewing right side to right side like making piano keys but made out of scraps.. I do not tear off the tape from the roll. I use my cone spool to hold the [paper roll from the backside of my machine and pull as I need it until im done then i rip the end.. cut off the fabric that hangs over the edge of the paper- use a 3 inch ruler and there you have it- one continuous strip 3 inch strip/roll made from scraps.

I use the paper rolls to measure borders for my quilt top. I pin one end to the middle top and one end to the middle side. I unroll the paper to the opposite ends and cut. This the exact size I need the borders to be. It doesn't matter if it measures to a weird 1/64" measurement. No numbers needed, just cut to the length of the paper roll.

I read about doing borders this way years ago in a quilt magazine. I believe it was a man who wrote the article. One of the best tips I ever got!

Thanks for the answer. That does sound interesting to use up scraps. Boy do I have those.
Now you got me thinking. When I make 2 inch HST I always cut 3 inch strips, this would be a good aid to use instead of tracing on the fabric.
