Any and all parts! I've used them all. Just watch the zippers, they are hard on needles!

Iamquilter 08-10-2011 09:16 AM

I made all four of my children jean quilts from their jeans and used flannel on the back, I cut the squares at 6 " or whatever size fit on the legs and good parts of the jeans.

AliKat 08-10-2011 10:13 AM

I don't anymore as these quilts are too heavy for me to manipulate.

Darn.

I make lots of jean quilts. Have sold several of them in fact. I even get orders for them that want photos from the rodeos put on them. I make some of them with the pockets also. I most always put fleece for the backing. That way you don't need batting. Flannel is also nice for backing. I do several patterns & they make nice heavy quilts & last for a very long time. I get most of my jeans from friends.

Slow2Sew 08-10-2011 10:51 AM

I found a Q'size bedskirt made out of heavier denim at a thrift store. I used to as a wrap around backing/binding on a throw. It's very warm, soft and everyone's favorite.

JoyjoyMarie 08-10-2011 11:02 AM

We had a neighborhood "quilt for charity" group for about 8 years, and we used jeans for quite a few quilts, and also made quite a few "funky" bags also. We used flannel to accent some, and I did a big one using long strips instead of squares, with pockets sewn on the 4 corners. I still have one in mind that I want to do using some eyelet curtain trim (also recycled, of course, like the jeans), but it's still on the "do later" list.

Fran Juern 08-10-2011 11:08 AM

I use the legs and any other good part. I cut them into 6" wide strip and sew them togather end to end. Then roll up. I then cut 3" strips and do the same. When I wan to make a quilt I measure off the length I want for the quilt and embroider wildlife designs in the large pieces. I alternate sewing the strips togather. When you do it this way you don't have to match any seams. It is like you are laying bricks. I try to use flannel for the backing. I tie some of them and have some machine quilted. These are really a hit with the hunters in the family. I have also made other themes. Golf , flowers, gambling, kids designs etc.

cheryl rearick 08-10-2011 11:13 AM

I use any part of it I can use. I've showed some blue jean quilts I made they are posted here on the board. I also use one pocket per row. I do not like using a pocket if it has bare threads, could be a waste of a good quilt. I use fleecing on the back and bind with WASHED cotton. Another board member showed me how to make really cute swing purses using cotton and material. SOOOOO cute. I've heard about the denim rugs, so far never seen one. have fun and for sure it will turn out for you. I use 7 inch blocks in my quilts and 7 blocks across by 11 down, OH the reason i like fleece is because it is 60 inches wide. cheap when on sale at JoAnna's.... I also cut blocks 6 inch, 5 inch 4 inch and 3 inch. Small is great in a baby quilt or toss pillows. I hand tie ALL of my denim quilts because I like hand tied look. :)

While at the good will store or garage sales, check out the denium jumpers or denium skirts, which yield a lot of fabric, and much lighter in weight, especailly when snipping front seams on a "rag quilt".

Val in IN 08-10-2011 01:49 PM

I use the legs to cut up for quilts and the top part of the jeans for purses.

GingerK 08-10-2011 01:57 PM

I've made purses, larger bags, throws, and lots of cushion covers. Best things in the world for rec rooms.

cmilton 08-10-2011 05:03 PM

ladies how do you quilt it?longarm or domestic machine?

dharen7 08-10-2011 05:42 PM

I buy a lot of jean dresses and skirts at goodwill the cashier thought I did pretty good getting six dresses all in my size half price then laughed when I told her it was the backing for my quilts. Also bought a lot of homespun material to use with the jeans I have a lg container with all children jeans bought at yard sales for 25cent to make a couple of children ones with all the designs on the jeans

Akes 08-10-2011 06:02 PM

Yes, I have made 5 so far and I have 4 more to go. I am making them for my other grandchildren. I have used all parts of the blue jeans, pockets, front and back and one large block I put muslin on the front of a jean with the zipper so they can use it as a pocket for their p j's. I have used heavy batting and flannel backing. I have tied them with embrodary floss, 6 strands. They are very heavy but they have been washed in the home washer. There is no pattern to the blocks. Almost like maybe a crazy quilt. The DG all love them. They younger ones are waiting patiently.

hey that's me! i think. but I use just about everything. the wall hanging I made used everything but the zipper. But I'm working on the cathedral window one and for my patch on the back I'm going to use a pocket. the rest of the pockets ended up in this. Well, except for a few that didn't fit. I'm saving those for the next one

I don't because the result is too heavy.

Dodie 08-10-2011 06:30 PM

so many things can be madr with old jeans I have made a jacket and a vest there is a lady in South Dakota called the junk jeans lady she makes all kinds of things with them
her site is www.junkjeanspeople.com she has some very interesting books and patterns

patchsamkim 08-10-2011 07:04 PM

Yes, I have used Jeans for a quilt...mixed with flannel plaids...have one just about done and plans to make at least 2 more. I also added photos as the quilt is a memory quilt...photo's are appliqued onto the jeans. It is a quilt for my youngest son from his dad's jeans and shirts. When it is done, will make one for my oldest son, and one for myself. Depending on what I have left after that, may also make quilts for my husband's siblings.

GeePatti 08-10-2011 07:51 PM

My friend has been doing blue jean quilts for years. Check out her website at http://www.recycledblues.com

OHSue 08-10-2011 08:13 PM

I was given about six garbage bags of jeans from a friend, she got some from another friend who had gotten them from another friend.....each person adding their own to the pile until it grew this big. Each person deciding not to do the rug or quilt they thought they would.
I was kind of cooling to the idea myself, but cutting them into strips, what a great idea. I have such a variety of colors that it could be like one of those speed pieced strip quilts..... the wheels are turning.

jme 08-10-2011 08:18 PM

The first quilt I ever made was completely denim. I cut up my dad's old wranglers.

cheryl rearick 09-16-2011 10:28 AM

I've made a few, use legs, some GOOD pockets, My squares are 7" x 7" (do cut and use smaller) 7 squares across and 11 a squares down. back with fleece, bind with cotton and everyone loves them come winter, Most sit in the living room just waiting to be snuggled in while watching TV, eating pop corn :) I have posted some here. By the way I use one pocket per row and yarn tie. have fun. I also mix lights and darks. Have also found stretch ( I do not like as well)

sguillot 09-16-2011 10:46 AM

I am going to make a rag quilt out of old blue jeans an back it with flannel for my son for Christmas. I am going to use the Accuquilt Rag cutter. It will save a lot of time and be easier on the hands. I can't wait to get it started hopefully this week-end.

simplyme 09-16-2011 01:54 PM

I made one last year. It had crazy patch squares and I used old blue jeans for the sashing. I pinked the edges so when I washed it, it would have a ragged effect. I also used old polo shirts to make the quilt. It turned out great perfact for a 20 something guy.

I am making a homespun/jean quilt now. Did you put a batting in it?

quilter1430 09-17-2011 12:05 PM

Being a longarm quilter, I've quilted several quilts made out of blue jeans, if you can call it quilting, because I didn't use any batting, just a flannel back. They turned out very nice!

pamglad 09-12-2012 02:38 AM

I have soome 5" squares in flannel and wonder if i cut some 5" squares in cotton can they be mixed to make a rag quilt for a toddler, will it still have the fray effect...

Absolutly! I infact just cut some up today, I am useing the ones I cut up today to make rag rugs as they are stained pretty bad We are farmers and truckdrivers here the guys get pretty dirty lol, the stains wont show in woven od braided rugs though :) I try not to waste anything :)

Search jean quilts here and on the internet under images you will get lots of ideas. I even see pockets on some. My boys still use the ones my MIL made them probly 15 years ago. They get better with age!

I have loads of scraps from two quilts I just made. I woul love to know how to make the rag rugs. I would hate to throw out the scraps, but theya re annoying me.
As for what parts of the jeans to use? ALL. The pockets, and zippers etc add eye appeal.

ragquilter 09-12-2012 03:27 AM

Yes, I mainly use the legs for rag quilts. If I find large jeans (44" or larger waist) I make shopping bags. They are very durable and easy to wash when things leak or the cat sleeps in one I left of the floor. I like the larger jeans for this because I can carry 2 gallons of milk in one bag. Then I also have the pockets for coupons or keys and money so I don't have to carry a purse.

Toni C 09-12-2012 06:08 AM

Wow Sept97 I bet that is heavy! Nice use of different colors! I feel like such a dork. Never thought of light color denim. Mine are for the car.

Shana 09-12-2012 06:40 AM

My sister did a beautiful 9 patch using blue jeans and polar fleece :) It came out very cute and VERY heavy lol but you can do all sorts of things with it that you would never do with a regular quilt lol They also make great dog blankets as they are very durable :) :)

I use lots of the jumpers too. They tend to be really cheap here ($1 or 2) and the ones with a gathered skirt have lots of fabric. I really like to use them for the back of rag quilts.

quiltin chris 09-12-2012 07:51 AM

I made a bed quilt for each of my sons. They will wear like iron. I don't think they can do too much damage when laundering unless they use bleach.
I used the pockets as decoration on the squares. I took name labels off the jeans and sewed them to the squares for some variation. Denim quilts are very heavy--so no batting was used in the ones I made. I used denim for the entire quilt top and then ragged it. I used the legs and the back pockets. The larger jeans will get you more material.

Then I made a denim rag tote. It is easy to load up with lots of stuff. When it gets dirty--just throw it in the washer. EverytimeI carry that--people want to know if I made it. Of course I am proud to say yes.

My boss asked me to make her one. So that could be my next project!

I'd love to see some of your shopping bags, if possible. Thanks.

Yes! I mainly use the legs, although pockets work well for some patterns (including chair arm saddlebags). I can't find the picture right now, but I made a DWR that I really loved. The background was red bandana fabric. The rings were raw edge (fringed) machine applique, with blue and white cornerstones. After I made a bed quilt, I went back and made a 4 ring baby quilt this way. My guild made a denim scrappy/crazy quilt with lots of colors of denim. I have also made denim potholders.

I went looking for something else and found a picture of the denim baby quilt as a WIP. I later changed the center cornerstones and did more fringing of the denim.

I am making a denim cathedral window...i saw it on one of the boards...just google the three words and you should find some samples.

MissM 10-19-2012 02:24 PM

I made a queen sized rag quilt and used the leather tags as a decorative addition to the blocks.
