Using Cat Fabric

I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to quilting. Over the years I have collected a huge stash of cat-related fabrics that I would love to use in a quilt. To all of you seasoned quilters, what pattern would you suggest for making this quilt to be able to see and appreciate my adorable cat fabric?

How about Attic Windows

Attic windows is a terrific idea that carolstickelmaier gave you.

Thank you so much. I'll try to find a sample of it to take a look.

Here is a link to several cat themed quilts I have done. Both cat blocks and quilts showcasing cat fabric. the second grouping of pictures is Attic Windows

Here is a really cute quilt a client made showcasing cat fabrics in cat blocks. I took it the next step further with some really intense cat quilting in the borders

You can showcase your cat fabrics in sew many ways. The centers of sawtooth star blocks (AKA a 6 pointed star), framed squares, the possiblities are endless. The Cat's Meow by Janet Klime has loads of cute cat patterns where you can showcase your cat fabrics.

Here are two cat quilts that I made. The Attic Windows was done from one fabric, fussy cutting the cats. Oops only one picture loaded, will try again later.

I made little girl quilts with fussy cut cats and "Hole in the Barn Door" blocks to frame the fuzzy cuts.

Any of the "I spy" quilts featured on this board would let you use lots of different cat fabrics. I also have a huge under-bed storage box full of cat prints, but I won't cut them, so now it's a collection and I just enjoy looking at them.

I just finished a cat quilt using "Warm Wishes". It came out very cute. My grandkids gave me fat quarters for Christmas. Good luck.

I made a funky aplique quilt, you can use them in the ba kgrounds.
Im interrested in tbis, im collecfing kitty fabric also.

You could also just cut large squares from each fabric, put sashing around each one, and put those together.

Or you could also just cut large squares from each fabric and alternate them with plain (or subdued/tonal) fabrics.

Thank you all so much. I'm getting excited about making this quilt! I was somehow dropped off the mailing list for this group and finally found it again. I'd forgotten just how nice everyone is.

The snowball pattern would give you a block which could be any size to fit your kitty pictures.

sewmom 09-20-2012 04:51 AM

I made a recersible quilt with my cat fabrics. Required cutting strips much like a string quilt. I used the smaller prints for this, so if your prints are larger, you can do this with your scraps.

Quiltaddict That quilt is darling. When I have fabrics I can't bare to cut I put borders around it to enlarge it and finish it up. I have some dog and cat fabrics and a few more I need to get done.

A snowball block is great if you don't want to cut your feature fabric up to much.

I, too, have been collecting cat fabrics for my daughter. One of my favorites that I made was a 9 Patch Pizazz.

I made a cat themed quilt for my husband's grandmother; I just used simple 6" blocks. BUT, it was one of my first quilts and I didn't have the confidence to try anything more complex. I love that attic window quilt with the fussy-cut kitties. Darling!

IMHO, any showcasing format, such as attic windows or the center of a 8 point star would be a good idea, as mentioned by others here.
