Using extra fabric from backing on the quit to do binding
I have made a quilt and I want to wrap the back around to the front to use as binding. I had done this once before and unfortunately did not write down the instructions. Do I cut the batting even with the quilt top and then leave how much fabric to turn over? I also want the corners to be mitered! I have looked on line but everything I have checked seems to be confusing. I know I can get the help I need here. I have been a member of this board for a good number of years and everytime I have a problem, there has been help here. Thank you all in advance.

I've used this method:

That first video is the method I use. I've heard it called "self-binding."

I use to do the binding like you want do it. I have found it is actually more work than a separate binding.

I really enjoy doing the self binding. I cut the batting back to the top and not have it in the way when I fold for the binding. I then cut the backing to 1 1/2" and just start folding it for the binding. I have found that cutting it this size is best for me. Hope this helps.

I use this binding method all the time for my children's charity quilts although it is getting more difficult to use for older kids due to fabric widths getting smaller and smaller. I have found the Quick Easy Mitred Binding tool (ruler) to be one of my best investments for this binding method.
